Why three domains?

Postby picpak » Mon Aug 04, 2008 3:26 pm

Something I've always wondered is why this site is spread across three domains: http://ultimateedition.info/, http://ubuntusoftware.info/, and http://forumubuntusoftware.info/ . It just adds confusion to me, I've never understood why it can't just all be held under one roof. What's wrong with http://ubuntusoftware.info/ that it can't be held under a section on the Ultimate site? Why does a forum need a domain all to itself?

This is how I think the 3 sites should be named:
Main page: http://ultimateedition.info/
Ubuntu software: http://ubuntusoftware.ultimateedition.info/
Forum: http://forum.ultimateedition.info/

Or:

http://ubuntusoftware.info/
http://ultimateedition.ubuntusoftware.info/
http://forum.ubuntusoftware.info/

Just to help save money and make things easier for everyone. :P

I agree that it does get confusing! I have no idea why its like this, but I'm no web-developer like yourself or TheeMahn. I know that page-rank is a big thing, but thats all I know... I'm an ignorant monkey when it comes to web-sites and making them

As I understand it,
There are several different domains, due to a high volume of traffic (particularly after a new release) that crash the servers. TheeMahn has set up different domains so that when one crashes it doesn't effect the others.
I also believe the forums are set up on an independent server to keep them isolated from the effects of traffic.
The repos are also on their own server for the same reason.
Grouping them all under one domain would require several linked dedicated servers (read very expensive here) and would not be affordable, so this method is the best compromise that keeps Ultimate Edition available.
Better a little confusion than close it all down.
1st Box: Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64/ 1.8 x64
2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC

Because no single domain is capable of containing the awesome, bursting-into-flames-of-fury AWESOMENESS that IS...

Ultimate Edition.

The last time this was attempted, the servers collectively coalesced into a single, liquid-metal plasmoid sphere that burned hotter than a thousand suns. Only by capturing the entire, now-liquefied(!), network in a Zero-Gravity Containment Matrix was humanity itself saved from total annihilation.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.
