PURE INSANITY

Postby aperrigo » Tue Aug 05, 2008 12:33 am

OK...my fall semester is about to start...my curriculum.

*Elementary Statistics

*SQL database programming

*COMPTIA A+ Hardware course -- taking because my Advisor is also teacher and he wredged me into it.
(Though I have my A+ Certs)

*ASP.NET C# Programming.

Now my post.

Anyone have any tips for getting an internship as a Computer Specialist?
Preferably, in Programming.

I am open for comments...just no bad language.

I did not post a poll opinion here is why:

I will be honest I did not care for learning mysql, I wrote a website in 2004 in sql, css and php it was a real chore took me 4 months to write. asp.net as well as php is a waste of time to learn, these are just my opinions, it is extremely hard to get a high page rank using either of the 2. The only exception to this rule is to use apache re-write mod.

C# it is great you will be learning this it is one of the most "in demand" languages & is rough to learn if you know other languages. My usplash maker uses c along with 2 other languages.

I have no clue what elementary statistics are...

hardware is always good to know. I have built probably close to 1000 computers, not to mention troubleshooting. If just for your own porpose it is indeed good to know.

Good luck,

I will say I wouldn't care to learn SQL either but...its mandatory for the curriculum...I would rather take C++ alongside C# and I am also delaying the later courses like ACCOUNTING 2, Speech, Business Communications 1 & 2 (Basically speech 3 and 4), and other various management courses. I am going to hate my last term is basically what it amounts too

Well I am aiming for UI Programmer / Computer Specialization...aka an Engineer so I guess every step requires more math for working with hardware and software; melding the two to work together.

Is ASM in your curriculum? It is the "/root" of all computer languages (2nd language I learned), probably too old school now. What is your "Major"? I prefer C++ over C# (called C sharp for others to understand) as well, but if you know one it is nothing to learn the next.

I have learned many worthless languages only to find that out later. Do not look down on SQL because of me you may have a job at blah blah . com writing their pages. At a time like today you should be happy to have a job & your education may be the sole provider. You on the other hand have a piece of paper that says you know it. Does it mean I do not?

No, it doesn't mean you know a language just because you have a piece of paper. Most companies I have applied for have required proof of work to show a competent knowledge of the specific field.
My Major is a GBA-AAS in Computer Information Systems. Then I will most likely transfer to Western Kentucky University to work on my Bachelors, then after that I don't know...probably would have to save up money for more COLLEGE.

In your spare time, learn all there is to know about all operating systems(Mac, Windows,Unix and as many Linux distros as you can handle) including as much software as you can stomach. Build your own computer and learn how hardware works. Teach yourself networking and trouble shooting hardware issues and systems recovery. Programming is a great thing, but there are too many people who are really good these days. By learning what I have suggested you will be able to fix anything and give you practical skills for the work place. You can always teach yourself programming in your free time. Most lower end programmers make very little money, however network people and IT specialists make big time money. Every company needs someone who can fix things. It is too expensive to out source repairs. Good Luck!! pch
