saving hard drive

Hello,

I killed my laptop hard drive by not changing the settings of the cycles, rotations or switch-offs. Forgive me for not knowing the proper terminology. I've purchased and installed a new hard drive, but I want to make sure i don't make the same mistake. Is there a way I can prevent this? The drive is listed as sda
