Hi 2.4penguin,
From what I have seen, it seems that Hewlett Packard has the best support for Linux. I can't recommend a particular one for you as I don't use one. I use a Canon MP610, and it seems to work just fine.
Have a look here: http://www.openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi
and choose to view Printers by Manufacturer. This will give you a good head start. ;)

Hope this helps.

Although it's old, I have networked an HP 1350 on my wife's computer under 2.3 32bit.

With Windows, we had no end of trouble with the thing...since the switch, works like a dream.

When I go to print from my computer, my computer says ...oh...you haven't got a printer ...hang on...there's one over here...would you like to print to this....let me set it up.....here you go....

What more can you ask...

Cheers

Howdy ! I have a HP Deskjet F380 relatively inexpensive and works like a charm with xsane , Quitelnsane , And Xscanimage in gimp and relatively easy to figure out how to do everything. HP drivers are available in synaptic and add and remove programs under graphics (if I remember correctly ) I have had no issues with this HP and Ultimate Edition. good luck ! ;)

Hello 2.4Penguin,
I have installed am using the following printers in Ultimate Edition 2.3:Printer installation and configuration in Ultimate Edition seem to be a fairly straight forward exercise. ;) ;)
HP Photosmart C5180 All-In-One via Ethernet
Okidata B4359 Laser Printer via Ethernet
Lexmark e120n Laser Printer via Ethernet
