I started to answer this UNTIL I noticed that the question was asked 2 years ago Sep 29, 2008. I hope that the OP isn't still trying to decide.
Just in case someone else is in the market, both the ATI HD 5450 and the HD 4850 work fine in 2.7.
The HD 5450 is fanless so no noise, and it requires no crossover connectors with a motherboard that has crossoverx support. Works great just don't expect to do any high end gaming. Has Driectx 11 support (like I care).

The HD 4850 has double precision, and is a better card for gaming (has Directx 10.something support).
The Saphire takes up 2 slots, the EVGA is single slot but it runs a good 10 degrees Celsius hotter that the Saphire does. The EVGA is also a longer card so if you get one make sure you have the room for it. The fans can get fairly loud on the HD 4850's but a Zalman VF1000 cooler makes them a lot cooler and quieter.

My Saphire runs a good 10 degrees Celsius cooler with the VF1000 and I expect the EVGA to run at least 20 degrees cooler once the fan connectors show up so I can throw it back in. I used IC Diamond for thermal paste since it works better than Arctic Silver and is electrically non-conductive.

Maybe someone will find this useful.

ATI and NVIDIA GPU is the market leader. After Upgrading your graphics card, both companies are generally the same price you can choose between the products. If I had the ATI video card, an NVIDIA graphics card have. Now I, I, I was delighted too, and overall satisfaction. However, we recommend the ATI.

4850 HD is pointless to buy bud.

Recommend

5670 HD = to 4770 HD

5650 HD = to 4750 HD

5770 HD = to 4870 HD to 4890 HD

5750 HD = to 4850 HD

Yes they are 100% supported and yes they work just fine.

I use 5670 HD,s for my kids and 5870,s for mine. All had Ultimate Edition 2.7 and Ultimate Edition 2.8 on them.

I agree with the above...

when i built my AMD Phenom II Quad I decided to go with ATI Radeon HD 5570 w/1gig DDR 3..supports DX11.. "all upgradable" (Hence below it says ATI device) :D The wonderful thing with Peppermint is that I have had no need to install the OEM drivers :D it just all worked... though it would have been nice to see the software that came with it... but meh! no loss... probably would need it for windows.. hehe :D

Thought this may be helpful ::

Owner of both, I can say with confidence that ATI gives every bit as smooth playing graphics as nvidia on 200 GTX GTS and 400 GTX GTS lines as ATI 4000 series and 5000 series.

I have owned or do own 4 280 GTX and 4 260 GTX 216 proc 2 285 GTX 2x 480 GTX.

ATI 5870,s still run cooler and give me the same in game FPS as the 480 GTX did at 3 rd the power usage.

Just saying........

ATI and Nvidia's GPU is the market leader. When you upgrade your graphics card, you usually need to choose the same price from the two companies and positioning products. Become a very popular brand in the GeForce, and with the FX series, these cards have been some of the best in the house graphicsmarket.
