Help and support for Ultimate Edition 3.8

3.8 rocks but a couple of issues

Postby rocknman » Thu May 08, 2014 12:08 am

Hello.
I'll try to be brief. About me: Newbie and over 50, XP knowledge scale 1-10 about an 8, Linux knowledge about a 2. Have had Ultimate Edition 3.8 installed for a couple weeks. Had printing issue from the start and fixed in about 3 hours time. Hooray for me! However I've had a couple other issues and after extensive searching through the forums on this site, Ubuntu forums, etc., I can't seem to resolve the problem/s. There are two and I don't know if they are related in any way.

First, when I changed the theme to blue deck and to a blue deck cursor/pointer (spaceship looking), it will only appear when hovering over Firefox, LibreOffice, etc. I tried the code by TheeMahn per a different thread (i.e. Can't Change Cursor Style):

sudo apt-get remove --purge ultimate-edition-cursors

It got rid of the red red spinning cursor to one more of my liking but didn't solve the issue. Not that big of a deal but I think the spaceship looking cursor is cool and it would be nice to have all the time. Really liked it on Ultimate Edition 2.8 Lite.

Second, Firefox, LibreOffice, and all other open windows do not have the minimize, maximize and close buttons (suppose to be in the upper right hand corner of the window). I've had to close Firefox, LibreOffice, etc. via this method per click File scroll down to Close. This has been a major headache for me. There are instances also when I was trying to find a solution where I opened up a window and could not close (Did not have in upper left hand corner of window the File option where you can scroll down and Close). I am at a loss in trying to fix this too. I thought I had the answer: Moved the Title Bar to the bottom because it covered the top part of the windows but this wasn't the problem.
Also, I cannot move any windows or manually resize.

I logged in as Guest this morning and it appears these issues are not affecting the Guest account. Hmmm.

I talked my boss in letting me put this computer build together to replace our XP rigs so now I'm under the gun. I had a local PC place put together the parts and install Ultimate Edition 3.8. Was going to try myself but no spare time. Boots up in about five seconds! Once I fix the issues, I can transfer all the files that I have converted to LibreOffice. This reason I decided on 3.8 is because TheeMahn said 3.8 was stable and it came preloaded with LibreOffice (which I've been using for about 8 months). Once we're ready to rock and roll with this, we will probably have another computer built with the same specs/parts. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for your help and your time. It is appreciated!

Hello.
I'm not sure if I solved the problem but I found on an Ubuntu forum the following "fix":

After opening a terminal and typing: "metacity --replace" the minimize, maximize and close buttons majically appeared! However, when I closed the terminal, they disappeared. A suggestion from a different thread stated that the command needed to be added to Startup Applications.

Well, it seems to be working OK.
I am also able to move and resize windows.

Comments, advice, is this the fix?

Thanks!
