I have tried numerous times to update the software on my laptop but to no avail. I keep getting the same errors about not being about to connect to certain repositories although they appear to be enabled in the software/updates section. It's almost as if I don't have permission to update.
Any ideas?

there is a high probability that the repo is off-line:
can you paste that into terminal & copy the result - - back here ?.
