Ultimate and Linux Mint

Postby barney » Thu Jul 09, 2015 8:26 am

Hi,

Just wondering if Ultimate Edition could be built on Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu?

I know Mint is based on Ubuntu but I think Mint is a little better (my opinion).

I dont think it will make much of a difference.
Ultimate is not ubuntu, whereas linux mint is ubuntu.
TheeMahn made ubuntu kinda into debian. Reverse-forward, forward-reverse!

Ok, I would like to add say cinnamon and update mate desktop but it doesn't seem to work in Ultimate Edition. Is there a reason for this?

I thought it had something to do with incompatibility with Gnome dependencies after a certain version. The ppa is still in Ultimate Edition 4.3, so I imagine it is still present with UEBuilder sets, but I was wondering if it could be done by switching either the PPA to something besides the Gwendel set, such as just using Linux Mint or the Lester ppa. I think Gwendol is still active but it is the nightly ppa that is active which isn't on Ultimate Edition

If you search using "gilgamesh777" on this site you can find a few examples although there is Cinnamon on a couple Ultimate Edition releases, he was very active with the Mint community, but tends to ruffle feathers, having been banned on both this site and Ultimate Edition Oz. On that site he is "Brahim" With me he only got in trouble from posting Mint as Ultimate Edition builds, and it was more of where he posted that was problematic and his demise came from attacking Blackwolf. He was very good at acclimating Ultimate Edition styles into Cinnamon, however.

What he did was install the latest Mint, then pulled the files from the Ultimate Edition distro in usr/share, particularly backgrounds, wallpapers, themes, and icons. He might have tarred them and installed to home, I would just pull and deposit directly to my root.

There is one thing, it is generally a bad idea to mix Cinnamon with anything, especially Mate. They are Gnome Forks, so there are issues when having Gnome bases thrown in the mix and more issues when using Mate and Cinnamon on the same OS. This includes Unity, but last I checked, it wasn't the end of the world with XFCE, LXDE, KDE, but Ultimate Edition in particular makes very heavy use of GTK (Gnome Tool Kit[formerly Gimp]) and uses the gnome file manager. Since it is the File Manager that draws the desktop(think open folder) you can still have issues with just Cinnamon DE, and of course the myriad of conflicts you see with Mate.

Are you serious?

Did you really just write that?

Fine, I'll bite. I wasn't attacking you, but I'll give you a chance to perhaps explain what it is you mean. What exactly is the "spyware" in Cinnamon DE? If you said Unity, I could agree to a point due to the nature of lenses. Cinnamon does no such thing as far as I know, so what is it in Cinnamon that causes this so we can remove the offending software, like removing the lenses from Unity.

Man that is technical.

I don't care so much about Mint spyware as long as I can install what I like on it, make it mine.

What if I install Ultimate Edition 4.3 which is KDE I believe, does KDE and cinnamon or XFCE work with them without conflicts?
I did try to install a xbuntu-desktop on one of the Ultimate Edition releases and that did not work either but I cannot remember which one.
