Compiz and latest versions of Ubuntu

Postby Zaileion » Sun Apr 20, 2014 12:18 pm

has there been any advancement on re-establishing the animation add-ons in versions of Ubuntu 12.10 and later? I know its been many many months since ive last checked and the animation add-ons were a transitional dummy package, and wanted to know if the DEV's here or anywhere else managed to get these features back?

Features such as burn. among others. its been so long I forget the others... sigh...

Compiz is not a standalone entity anymore.
There are no updates either.

KDE now uses compiz code internally for kwin, so its just called kwin. By far KDE has all almost all the effects of compiz but I'm not sure whether you have burn effect.
Gnome has extensions that simulate wobbly windows and prolly nothing else.
Unity has now native compiz integration but with minimal effects.

Mate does Not use compiz as a compositor or has anyone working on at the code level to bring compatibility. Theemahn integrates it. How stable and well meshed it is, only time will tell.

People have reported that it works stably with mate 1.8.

Mate 1.8 it is then. But that still only works on ubuntu 12.04 correct? In other words if I install Ultimate Edition 4.2 will the animation add - ons and burn effect install? Synaptic package manager doesn't care which desktop environment in use its based on the distro version is it not?

In a nutshell what I'm trying to do is upgrade to a later version of ubuntu such as 12.10 or 14.04 but keep the burn effects among other animations. Is this possible? Or am I trying to accomplish something that simply cannot and will not ever be possible?

If it is possible a quick 3 sentence how to would be awesome.

If this is somehow possible in Ultimate Edition 4.1 or 4.2 I will gladly become a member to be able to download this latest version.

Your assumptions are same and just like everyone else's.
Hard to tell you or predict the truth.
2 years progress into the future of opensource is like 15 years in proprietary software.
Mate is now a community project unlike gnome 2.x series which were being developed and supported by companies.

You are on track....Synaptic is extremely powerful but will convince you, you were always an idoit. It works best on debian stable.

Desktops revolve around OpenGL which revolves around AMD/NVidia/Intel/ARM. AMD and Nvidia both have too many developments and features which have to be implemented for Opengl newer desktops.
The compositor --Compiz-- depends on opengl. Advancement of opengl == advancements in compiz...but compiz is not a standalone anymore :| .

CCSM is another story :!:

My Answer: Thee will have to mesh in compiz code into mate if fancy effects are anything to go by. As time passess the broader the spectrum of granular imcompatibility will grow, which will make Compiz one day deprecated and inconsistent with newer desktops and graphics cards. Im sure TheeMahn always has a plan :ugeek: .

Re: Compiz and latest versions of Ubuntu

The following has been my goal since i started using Ultimate Edition several years ago. Its been a long road but now i've made it to owning all the equipment i have worked so hard for, but now i'm loosing the effects of Compiz...

So here is my reasoning for my desire to have the compiz effects, i know i must have dozens of posts asking the same damned question. i have 6 monitors on a video wall in my basement. 2 of which i use as my primary monitors. My dual radeon 7990s run 2 - 65 inch Samsung UN65F9000 tv's and 4 7000 series Samsung tv's. This Computer is integrated into a McIntosh Digital/Analog Audio System. i am an audio/video and systems security integrator by trade so i write it off as "research"... Anyway, electric sheep and the remarkable effects Compiz give as well as the additional eye candy from Ultimate Edition make for the most remarkable computer anyone has ever seen. i mean peoples eyes almost pop out of their head when they see what Linux and some tweaking can do. (anyone ever tried the Commodore Distro of Ubuntu? Far Out!)

I really want to upgrade to the latest version of Ultimate Edition but the Compiz effects are minimal. i have hardware compatibility issues and just other little problems with 12.04 especially with multiple monitors across 2 graphics cards with dual gpus in each. Windows runs smooth as glass but still have problems with Ubuntu. this is ongoing for 2 years now, and since ive made the upgrades to the 7990s no improvement.

needless to say i find a video wall with these fantastic effects to be a visual experience that is like no other,

I am hoping Thee Mahn has something up his sleeve so i can upgrade to 4.2 and still have all the greatest effects from compiz. Maybe even implement all the long lost compiz effects back from 10.04 and before. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!

If there is a programmer out there that can do this for Ubuntu 14.04 / Ultimate Edition 4.2 please contact me directly as im willing to do whatever it takes to keep the effects when upgrading to the latest ubuntu/Ultimate Edition. [email protected]

Edit**
I started saving for this equipment when I was 29. im now 36. No wife, No kids. I sure would like to keep the visual experience provided by Compiz. If there is anyone with any suggestions please let me know...

Compiz has been on kind of a downswing since there have been many changes to graphics. Am going to follow this post though since there are real wizards on here that know incredibly more than I do! I would love to see menus bending, folding doing all the wild stuff used to see a few years ago! So, please all with knowledge is time to share so we can all get these desired effects back! That is if possible?

I started writing an application a few months ago in python and bash called fusion tray that I'm hoping to slipstream compiz back into the works of upcoming Ultimate Edition 4.2.

I had a week coming off for July 4th shutdown & intended to get things back on track. I have on my pc installed Ultimate Edition 4.2 lite that has been Repostormed it is a flawless or very near flawless operating system. A majority of what little time I have off has been spent programming Repostorm.

I hate to openly inform you the company I work for has scheduled me to work the 4th of July week and specifically July 4th itself. Independence day working and a veteran of desert storm, a real crack to the mouth. I have no idea where or when I can get the time to try and catch things up.

When I took my job I was told I would be working 4 ten hour days and occasionally may be asked to work an additional Friday and rarely a Saturday. I have had one 4 day work week since I have been there and had to bring in a doctor's slip to get it.

The choice of jobs in my field of expertise in this area are super slim nearly nonexistent. No degree and have still been told overqualified. I have to have a job obviously, so I'm really kinda screwed. I don't make squat $9.50 an hour to make matters worse. I can assure you with the utmost honesty I do not volunteer for over time. It is consistently forced upon me.

If anyone can get compiz running incredible is TheeMahn! I have never seen compiz do half of what TheeMahn can make it do anywhere else! Am missing that on these OS's I build as am not even a quarter proficient! Still, I have learned from the very best developer this world has and of course is TheeMahn! The drive he possesses just rubbed right off on me and I will forever thank him for all he has taught me! 2 years of College I went through and seems like on here, I went through 4 years! Is a wealth of knowledge here with all the brilliant minds that give it all so freely and generously to us! Once again have to thank everyone for the time you give to us all! TheeMahn, my heart goes out to you, am knowing about time slipping away as have been running around like a chicken with my job, too! What used to take a day is going on for weeks, just do not have the time!

Repostorm, is incredible and most definitely worth every second spent on it! The amount of time it saves, is beyond my comprehension! That program spins through what would take me a week in about 10 minutes! Just sheer genius and am still hoping your genius becomes more recognized! It needs too, you are the only one that cares about users and works selflessly for hours to keep perfecting everything! Other developers do not even put in half the time you do! Am hoping you will get the time you need and everything else you need as you truly deserve it for all you do for us! Best wishes always!
