After compiling kernel no space left!

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 1:21 pm

Now that I made the useless debs, I figured would go back dump everything and give a second shot at it! No space left! Now I deleted the folder under root tried all kinds of clean commands and still no space left! All searches on the net reveal useless information! If anyone has this information please let me know! Don't feel like wasting another 45 minutes to get it all set up again by reloading! Never thought after deleting 8 gigs that would still remain, is very strange! Thanks for any information still am searching also as want this cleared so can start again!!!

What directory are you compiling from BBoss? Is it /tmp? I would use your /home encase the directory your using doesnt have enough actual space left on it. You can check by executing this command before you start
Code: Select all
du -hs
Also make sure /usr/src and /boot has room for it...

Re: After compiling kernel no space left!

Had it in home folder as it should be and compiled in deb form. Of course both debs don't work. Should have given me 3 debs but was not the case, think I worded it wrong!!! Probably after the job was done(was late and was tired) should have done make-kpkg clean or something to make sure the space was freed. Not the case! Shut down Vbox said I only had 300mbs of space. Original space set for Ultimate on VBOX was 40 gigs. I figured that was more than enough space to work with! Now I know why those TB disks are worth their weight!!! Just a simple install of Ultimate leaves about 16-18 of that 40 free. Now how compiling that kernel to debs went through 16-18 gigs of space is beyond me! This morning under sudo went in and deleted the working folder which was 8 gigs. Instead of showing I have 8 more gigs to mess with is still claiming I only have 300mbs. Nothing seems to clear it! Have a feeling will just have to start from scratch and reload. This time will go with a 100gigs on VBOX. If I am lucky maybe that will be enough???? Is very confusing to me as no site discusses how much space is used to accomplish such a feat!!! Tried your command to no avail. Just gives me permission denied! Even under root is no dice. Did the janitor stuff and everything I can think of and absolutely nothing frees space back up! Is a real good one! As have said seems like the most trivial things turn things I am doing to dust!!!! Thanks for any help on this as will help for the next time most likely. Am getting tired of no solution and just want to get these projects going again. Little tired and don't feel like pulling another til midnight! Probably the "ole lady" will pull her cast iron frying pan and smack me over the head, I do that again!!! She isn't too happy with this! Can't say I don't blame her. You know how I am though want to keep pushing and learning!!!!!

http://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... 4169,d.bmk

The above is the pdf book for linux kernel in a nutshell...........it guides you through compilation and options you can pass...........although its based on the 2.6 series its very practical and shows what parameters you can pass at compile time.

Search also for pdf's and other ebooks(they are mostly free)...

You need to pass kernel parameters to optimize it for your arch and cpu. and 'speed up your build'.....
The amount of time it took you is pretty long and its highly reminiscent of the pentium days.

Eg: concurrency during compilation.....in the ncurses utility run with the command
Code: Select all
make menuconfig

export CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=2

General rule is CONCURRENCY_LEVEL = number of processor cores + 1

which means on your quad core the level will be 5............

Your athlon II 630 is modestly powerful chip....you can overclock to 4Ghz with a better cooler.........and will yield much better results....

here is the ubuntu way:
http://linuxtweaking.blogspot.in/2012/0 ... guide.html

here's something good...on a similar setup as yours:
http://verahill.blogspot.in/2012/10/com ... ebian.html

here's a detailed Debian way:
http://users.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/Kernel.htm
An important quotation from the above site:
""I like to keep at least one back version unless I know that the old kernel will no longer work due to changes made since migrating to the new kernel""
keep always one working kernel handy in case of disaster...

there are myriad methods of doing the same thing..........making the right choice is upto you. It wont be stable if you think it is or it works like it should, you have to know it is = more time gone by = more experience(who me!! :faceslap )....

As you gain more experience you will realize only a particular series of kernel versions are worth a shot....... even if they are the best it needs to work the same with everthing else....3.7.1( in kernel world brand new maybe impractical as even gcc must mesh well) is not as promising as the 3.6 series...........3.7.1 is new and maybe better for new chips like sandy/ivy bridge, new xeons and bulldozer, piledriver derivatives and opterons and the included arm stuff.

The changes in kernel 3.8:

Yeah!!!! :D :D Now this is what I need some real documentation and not a bunch of jokes! When I reloaded on vbox yesterday found the documentation, where it should be! See this kernel stuff is u---m just a little confusing???I think rebuilding a transmission or engine is easier! Apparently on the change with this exton kernel, those documents were not included!!! Sure the performance is there as it does beat the 3.2 severely via boot time and all other actions! Of course I have also learned that there are differences when one's own system is not configured exactly to match the kernel. In other words if you download a kernel, deb for instance, might be for precise but does it carry all the functions that Ultimate has? No! That causes problems! Sure I made the kernel on Vbox in deb form. Will that work for someone else's? Nope! When Ultimate loads along with the kernel it configures itself to the hardware of that computer! So the one I made is only good for my computer. Hooray for me? Not my intentions! Also as we all know Vbox might not configure video drivers at all since it has the host supplying it! So good for practice, but for use? Once again, probably not! So I suppose the best remedy is to just compile inside Ubuntu Builder or command line via ISO. Little less time consuming and probably better results! Yes, I know my hardware is fading away slowly but surely!!!! Kernel development is moving past it and pursuing new components as it should! Now menuconfig or xconfig can be real confusing!!! Tons of options there! Did that first time around and hit the wrong setting! So I am starting to understand where the hassles are, and to me is a great beginning!!!! I just know there has to be a way to knock out the hassles and will find it someday! I thank you very very much for the links and information as need it real bad as am only just starting to understand the issues and problems! I'm not a selfish person and am really seeking to make things better for everyone!!! Is the main reason am here as Ultimate is the same way!!!!! Like they always say "BIrds of a feather flock together!" Am grinning as can't thank you enough for the info. Google has been kind of spastic on me lately! No browser trouble, just finding things is all! Sure will clear after the holidays!!!!

Forgot to also leave a note for anyone following this post. When your debs are finished, Please by all means do not forget to issue the command
Code: Select all
make-kpkg clean
. If you do not you will be left with a lot less space to use on your computer! Without issuing that command and closing terminal leaves all kinds of files everywhere. A simple delete of the folder you were working through will not free the space up. What is done to remove that used space remains unknown to me, but will pursue it sometime!

Thanks very very much for that adjustment!!!! I know copy-paste is my big friend also!!!! I sure wish I would have added the statement about updating the compiler to gcc-4-7-2 in the kernel article I wrote. Finally found an awesome description on installation at http://stephanfr.com/tag/gcc-4-7-2/ Did that in Ubuntu builder last night and at present is happening on this end. Should have been done first! You think after all I read, I would understand that point first! Nope made some junk and had to junk it! A lot of hours for zip! So goes the learning process! Of course if I was in school to learn all this, would probably take me a semester to get to this point! I have to be grateful that I have learned enough to get to this point! Of course if it weren't for some of the great links you supplied, am sure I would be lost!!!! Sure I get some decent ones, but here and there I muff the words for the search! Google can't read my mind and know exactly what I mean! Maybe will write up a little post for gcc install with the code from the above page! Have enough time for it as can't do too much while this thing is compiling it! Am hoping I do not make any more errors with the next build of Ultimate am doing!!! I believe my failure yesterday is due to the wrong compiler. As these kernels and compilers go hand in hand is like driving a car and not putting oil or gas in it! Just doesn't work! Most likely all the problems I have experienced with these kernels not installing properly in one or two points is due to that point! I watched a little of the process and noticed a folder being created that I noticed flopped on an install of one of the kernels I messed with! Is the present one, I am on! Yes is a real mistake 3.7 on a gcc-4.6.3! Processes and folders not done correctly. Somewhere around 30 errors! All I really get here is an occasional blur in letters that is noticeable. Processes and programs are quite functional, but all in all you know something will happen if is not all corrected at some point! So this next build of Ultimate if all goes well will have all the proper things needed to run as it should and deserves to! TheeMahn made it great and I have no intentions or wrecking it by my poor judgements or mistakes! Also changed the default desktop to gnome-shell as KDE can be a little confusing to some users due to the menu being smaller and going to the side! Gnome has always been an easier desktop to find things quickly! I don't mind KDE, but Gnome is just faster in that sense!!! Ubuntu builder is nice as can navigate a little faster, but there is some drawbacks as with most things! Will just be nice to have it all updated and running tip top as it has always run! Is a lot of fun all this stuff and will definitely let you know of all the progress made! I would up the settings on the CPU, but been there before and wound up grounding that machine to dust within a few months! Lately am better off as this thing has been running 2 days straight! Will get shut down after kernel is installed in Ubuntu Builder! Might also be a chance after next try to add to it again. Next would try an animated boot, something python I believe! Ultimate deserves some kind of show on the way up to the desktop!!! Will think of it soon!!! Thanks again for all your help Pam and everyone here, without it am nothing!!! Really appreciate the shove forward as is great to be able to make something everyone will enjoy!!!!

@BBoss
thats really good advancement......for less than a year with linux
surely but steady you'll get there....
Python: The only programming language anyone from a 4 year old to 80 years of age can use and build things with..
I trust python more than c, to send a ship from earth to callisto !

@pch.shot
since long pch, since long..........built a spin of off fedora a few years ago....especially when you had codec problems
and high bandwidth internet was just too costly.....remastering own distro and compiling codecs was the only option.....
Today id love to build my own distro but .........Time and family problems in the way!!
will have keep sorting and find a way out........and when i do (plan), it'd be off Arch Linux............
Its really sweet ...........works like a charm on my netbook........puts lubuntu at shame..
So nothing in the near future unless someone else wants to rev things up!!
