Video Driver Can't Find Kernel Source

Postby Micro » Mon Dec 10, 2012 3:50 pm

This may be helpful if you are using NVidia or AMD Drivers and a different type kernel fork. Example, I am running a 3.6.9 pf kernel. When installer runs it says Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources. And you know for a fact that you have them installed. You can verify this from navigating to the /usr/src directory and checking. Easy fix is to run the following --kernel-source-path command as the Installer will state. But the fact is most forget to add the rest of the command. Here's an example and hope it helps someone ;) :
Code: Select all
--kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-3.6.9-pf/usr/include sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-310.19.run

Am getting to think this message here is a irreputable fact!:ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-3.7.0-030700-generic is not supported. Simply will not build the dependencies needed for the fglrx drivers that are needed so I can install my drivers. Have normal graphics just once again can't use compiz, also has the added effect of not being able to download debs so is a serious matter that goes past the driver! Maybe I should have fixed the source list instead of leaving it as it was but that script was specific leading it to the proper site! Should I have installed the new compiler first? Didn't do it since I figured as a deb file is already compiled and should just put the files where they belong! Am I right???? Need some advice on this, if need be will format again and start from square one. Since to me seems as if these folders and files are not all getting assembled properly, I am making a mistake somewhere. So really need advice. Little afraid to try the other idea as seems to extend past the video! Sorry am such a pain but want to get there and know it can be done! I just don't want to accept that deal above, but maybe will give someone a clue that is more learned than I am! Thanks for your time and all help is welcome and greatly appreciated. Am trying my best to learn as much as I can!

You can try this patch and instructions here http://askubuntu.com/questions/224663/how-to-patch-fglrx-for-installation-on-kernel-3-7rc7. Keep in mind you may have to edit appropriatly to the exact kernel version you have installed. I'd copy it all out on here but I'm thinking you are anxious to hack away at this. If you need help just give a shout back.

Guess my message did go somewhere! Thanks for the page. Did the install again this time putting in fglrx first. Have the debs so can install individually. If I get the same result will hit this page you are mentioning, since it labels the exact error I have received a few times! The messed up install of 3.7 had also affected 3.2 kernel a bit which find strange! Left me with no effects on compiz. Just am hoping this all works this time and can write it all up to help anyone else if they experience problems. Don't want to see the next person wind up messing with it for a couple of days! Also reloaded in XFS making sure to format! Think I missed that point last time! Will get back to you when is back to normal and on 3.7. Thanks for finding that information Micro is deeply appreciated! Didn't even get half as close as the info you found! Great deal. Thanks!

The important thing here is that you never gave up. Any time I hear someone complain about issues with Linux Operating Systems, they usually are quick to revert back to their old OS.(with the ocasional threat. lol) To me, it's a small price to pay for the freedoms that come with open source software. Not to mention the knowlege gained. Neways, we all learn something new everyday, so keep on hacking at it... :geek:
