Crash(Solved)

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 3.5

Crash(Solved)

Postby Xanayoshi » Wed Oct 24, 2012 5:37 pm

I crashed so hard yesterday my PC turned off. I turned power management off because the screen saver settings refused to be changed. This is not a problem specific to Ultimate Edition or even KDE, and could just be me. To be fair I think my external (stupid seagate) is going down on its own accord and may be having an effect in relation to the drives. It is running KDE Mint Maya if I boot it, but I mostly just move memory there. However, I left Ultimate Edition running after I turned it back on and reset the external and it seems to be doing fine. Plus the screen didn't turn off like I wanted. So...win?

i second that. Just a little something i keep in my KB for screen timout fix. Snagged it from the Mint forum if i remember correctly. Its worked for several debian distro's for me:

Open a terminal window and enter the following command:
xset q
if the output has a section like this:
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
timeout: 600 cycle: 600
Just run the following command:
xset s 0 0
Then add to startup, Go to Menu>Applications>Preferences>Startup Applications-Click the 'Add' button
command field type in xset s 0 0 and close the box by clicking 'Add'.

Yup.
you can check in "disk utility" if your drives are failing--smart status.... if something is bad it says ..drive is failing...

It wont work for self made external disks as most casings lack "smart status" -- additional disk monitoring parameters.

If you are usinga fully branded external disk ..it will show disk is healthy or failing.

I am all about the SSD. So often I am working on my PC and I yell "Who put all these record players in here?!!!". Soon. Soon. As far as the problem in this case went, it boils down to sheer laziness and stupidity on my part. At some point I moved the external hdd usb to the front, and didn't bother to put it back in the back where it belongs.
