(Solved, sorta). Can't get W7 to finish installation.

Postby Wolfie Lee » Sun Oct 07, 2012 5:21 pm

Won't have own Internet for a month or so, and can't even update my hardware list (last minute thought while Im at my folks house). I have a new(er) MSI micro atx MB in the mix now, and thought it to be the problem, however the compatibility site says fully compatible. I cannot see the new LG DVD burner to be a problem, either.

Will update hardware list ASAP, but have no idea when that will be. I have dumped all files from my JBOD mess onto my new seagate 2T external, and have been wanting to get back to the Win 7 / Ultimate Edition 2.7 (sorry, just think that to be the peak of Ubuntu, I do NOT like the unity desktop that I can't customize....) Dual-boot setup. I don't even think I'll be giving Win 8 a test drive, as I have heard they will be leaning toward the nettop - style UI, as well.

Anyway, I used DBAN to wipe my SATA 750GB 'cuda. I TRIED numerous times to put Win 7 on the thing first, but with the same results as I will explain. I wanted SOMETHING to work from, and installed Ultimate Edition 2.7, and all updates. So I created a separate partition for W 7 to try again a couple times, and this I what happens:

It seems to install fine, but the very LAST time that it restarts, the logo animation plays, and then the screen just freezes black. When I try to use the install disk to "Repair", IT says that it is the wrong version. When I use the Windows 7 64 bit REPAIR disk, it finds no problems. I DID notice that after it sets long enough with a black screen, my monitor will loose signal, as if the OS is operating, and then goes to screen saver mode or something, because when I jiggle the mouse, the signal comes back (black, of course, but the monitor shows a signal again). I try booting to safe mode but it states that installation cannot continue in safe mode. This IS the custom NVIDIA version shown in my signature That I am trying to install from. I have re-burned the DVD and the checksum shows correct as well. I am at a pure dead-end. The same thing happened when there was NO OS on the drive (probably 3 or four attempts, with 2 DVD's)

I sure hope someone has a clue and experience with this problem and can point me where to look or talk me through a solution...???

Hi, did you install Ultimate Edition first? Believe you have to install Win7 first then any Linux distro you want to put on.

IF you have a different GPU(maybe onboard) .......try that too...
Seems like windows is running in background but the resolution isn't correctly set....driver is not installed correctly.

OR

Try this google search:
http://www.google.co.in/search?client=u ... 40&bih=415

Im assuming you have done a fresh windows7 install.
reformat and reinstall windows ............let your Ultimate Edition partition be.....later on just repair grub.

DBAN causes similar problems over and over............not recommended unless you giving away the disk to someone else...it also erases MBR and all partitions. It basically overwrites all your data with 0's and 1's.

First: Thanks, guys for the answers.

Looks Like I am further away than I had planned from getting Internet, as I just got laid off on Monday :( ...So...it may be a long time till I can get back to this next, so, again, no hurries, here.

OK...
In answer of "Windows first, then Linux..." :

Yes, as I said, I did try that at least two, if not 3 times total.

THEN I just went ahead and installed Ultimate Edition 2.7. Within 2.7, I ran gparted and created the WIndows partition. I got through the entire installation process 3 times with all video running hunky-dory up until the FINAL Re-start, when all that would happen was the windows spash, then the black screen. It is the NVIDIA (custom black) edition (created by rockers team (Site is HERE: http://www.rtwincustomize.net/)), and therefore should have no problem with the driver because it is at the point where the custom NVIVIA Splash pops to the bottom of the screen and the installer tells you "Checking video performence now" or something like that. However, I WILL disconnect the card and give it another whirl.

BTW, I always have to re-install grub 2 when I attempt to instal WIN7....so I already know how that route goes...

Again, Thanks for the replies!

I had never heard of the Win7 version that you are installing till now lol, was just reading on it. I have never worked with that version so would not have a clue as to how it works. it does sound like some sort of driver conflict within video drivers maybe. But since I have no experience with that version i don't know. Hope you can get it sorted out.

Can you verify that you have the latest bios installed? Single or SLI Config? If so try only one card first. Similiar issues due to bios and direct x needing updates...

Forgot to ask if you tried to leave it on the black screen for ten minutes and wait to see if it boots? Common issue with windows 8 and looks like what you are experiencing. Good luck...
