switching from ubuntu to Ultimate Edition 2.5

Postby diablo10000 » Wed Jan 06, 2010 10:23 pm

I'm new to the whole Linux system, I heard about Ubuntu from a friend and decided after many problems with windows to give it a try, OK so I download the ISO and burn it with infrarecorder for windows on my wife's vista comp and i installed ubuntu on my comp, it works fine! still learning how to use it though. then i hear about Ultimate Edition 2.5, i want it. so i download it and burn it on wife's comp, come to my comp, pop it in and tried to boot live dvd, nope not gonna happen, i get an error message.

"ISOLINUX 3.63 Debian 2008-07-15 copyright (c) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin
isolinux disk error 32, Ax=4200,drive 9f
boot failed press any key to retry........"

i don't know how to uninstall Ubuntu or what to do, I do like the looks of Ultimate Edition 2.5, but can't install it. I even tried to burn it with nero 7. any help i would be greatful for

Hi diablo1000.
Let's take this a step at a time. If Ubuntu 9.10 loaded fine, then to all intents and purposes, so should Ultimate Edition 2.5 as it is based on Ubuntu 9.10. So where's the problem? Let's find out.
Firstly, did you check the MD5Sum of the Ultimate Edition ISO file you downloaded? The MD5Sum must match what is provided on the downloads page - if it does not, then you have a corrupt download and burning it to a DVD will give you issues.
Secondly, if the MD5Sum does match, then your download is good and we proceed to the burning stage. When you burn the ISO, you must burn it at the slowest speed possible - 4X would be good. This ensures a good burn.
Once you have completed these two steps, try the DVD and come back and tell us how it has gone. I know its a pain, but please be very diligent with the above two procedures as this is where the majority of issues come from.

Cheers.

i'll let you know how it goes downloading from sourceforge.net

It shouldn't.Perhaps the 9.10 download is corrupted also?It is possible to run an os from a bad download...it just won't be stable. If your checking the cpu with system monitor it is known to be quite off with the cpu load.

Hello, I have noticed during the first few times booting UBUNTU/ Ultimate Edition versions, that the processor will run at or near 100%, then will be at lower levels in the following boots. I am not sure but will guess that the OS is doing background things like indexing, etc. I only know that the first few times I was concerned but now let it do its thing(s) and not worry. However if it always runs at 100% every time you boot up that would be a problem for sure.

Whoa! Hold it right there.
You need to check the MD5Sum of the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO file - not your individual files on the CD. If you look again carefully at the link I gave you, you will see there is more than one MD5Sum number there - these are because there is more than one type of Ubuntu 9.10! Find yours in the list and compare it with the result you get from checking your ISO file only.

I'll make an assumption that you have downloaded the desktop 32 bit version. If so, your MD5Sum should be:
8790491bfa9d00f283ed9dd2d77b3906 *ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso

Sorry - I should have been a tad clearer.
