* Software requirements
* Qt 4.2.1+
* D-Bus 1.0.0
* libasound2 1.0.12
* PulseAudio 0.9.10+ (optional)
* PulseAudio 0.9.15+ (optional recommended)

Do you have these installed?

According to Skype they do not have support for Ubuntu 9.10.

Cell, deeds3353 has been a sensei and helped me to sort it out. if anyone has issues with skype the solution is fairly simple.
1) DL skype
2) install via synaptic the repos for skype
3) right click on the sound icon on toolbar select sound preferences, input and mess ill it works. don't do too much as this will cause it to fail. i messed little by little till it i found there built in mic and speakers worked ok. this is on a dell studio with 2.5 installed. <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW>
