Use Synaptic to install/remove packages. The Ubuntu Software Center is slow and doesn't work on any computer.
If you want a list of good applications, a short description and an integrated installer, try Ultramatix.

I have always use the "Software Center" without problems. I can attest that the software center is a good source to add/remove applications!!

If you want a wider variety of applications in the software center you of to select the show drop down arrow and select "All available applications" in stead of "Canonical-maintained applications"!!

Ubuntu Tweak & Ultamatix are also excellent for adding applications but not necessarily the best application to remove applications installed in the system that are installed through other sources!!
