[SOLVED] Problems installing Ultimate Edition 2.5

Postby giulio78 » Thu Dec 24, 2009 11:38 am

Hi,
I tried to install Ultimate Edition 2.5 on my Packard Bell iPower X2007
(Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2400Mhz, RAM 4096MB, 2x250GB SATA HDD in RAID0, GeForce 8800GTS 640MB)
but ubiquity closed at 94% during GRUB installation :(

A week ago I installed original Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic cd without problems, so I don't understand where is the issue :?

Can you help me?

Merry X-MAS & Happy New Year!
Giulio

Hi and welcome ! did you try the "search function" to try and see if this has been addressed already ? " did you do a MD5sum on the iso hash before burning? which we normally recommend. Plus it is always recommended to burn the iso at the lowest speed possible 4x or lower!! " (quote from Darkchild on a previous thread) ;)

Re: Problems installing Ultimate Edition 2.5

I have a hp pavillion dv100 laptop which i have installed ultimate edition on about 7 times and i get the same error at reboot after installing. The install goes perfect with no probs at all until after it tells me to do a reboot and to remove the medium. The error is at load,it says...
grub loading.
(error):unknown filesystem
grub rescue>

and it just sits there indefinately.
I have partitioned my drive with the reiserfs,ext3,ext2 and i have let the install do it too.
The live cd runs great on my laptop with no probs.

I have manually done the partitioning too, swap 1st,/,/home..../,/home,swap........have tried just / and have tried just /home for partitions.

Is this a grub problem?or am i doing something wrong

I have installed and ran, dreamlinux, pclinuxos, trustverse desktop, opensuse, and kubuntu on this laptop and then i found ultimate and decided that i like it and wanted it installed as a standalone os(no pen drives or cd/dvd to fool around with.
Hopefully this is something i can edit and get to work.I am trying to install the ultimate edition 2.5,havent tried any other versions as of yet.
Any assist and advice would be helpful.I am not totally new to linux, but im not an expert by any means.Still in the noob class tho.

Try this, be sure your bios is set to boot your hard drive, sometimes for some reason this gets botched and it wants to boot from the optical drive, if that is not the case, Boot live (you will be reinstalling) change desktop theme to 2.2 (you can see operations better) install use entire disk, At the 7th or 8th page look bottom right "Advanced" button, a small window will open "install boot loader" it will say hd0, click that and then click your hard drive hda or hda with your drive size, that will install GRUB2 to your hard drive , also make sure you don't have a flash drive or any other external drives installed, that may prevent booting. :ugeek:

Problem solved! :D I installed GRUB manually.
For future reference I leave the steps that I followed.

Bye
Giulio

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install Ultimate Edition 2.5 as usual.
On the last step before installation begin, click the Advanced options and uncheck the install boot loader option.
After installer finishes, close ubiquity installer without rebooting the machine.

Open Terminal.

Code: Select all
ls -l /dev/mapper/

This is my partition table:
Code: Select all
sucrw-rw---- 1 root root  10, 60 2009-12-26 00:01 control
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252,  0 2009-12-26 00:01 nvidia_ecaacbca
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252,  1 2009-12-26 00:01 nvidia_ecaacbca1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252,  2 2009-12-26 00:01 nvidia_ecaacbca2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252,  3 2009-12-26 00:01 nvidia_ecaacbca3

nvidia_ecaacbca is RAID0 array
nvidia_ecaacbca1 is Windows XP partition
nvidia_ecaacbca2 is swap area
nvidia_ecaacbca3 is Linux root partition

Target into installed system:
Code: Select all
sudo mount /dev/mapper/nvidia_ecaacbca3 /target/
sudo mount --bind /dev /target/dev/
sudo mount -t proc proc /target/proc/
sudo mount -t sysfs sys /target/sys/
sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /target/etc/resolv.conf
sudo chroot /target/

Install GRUB:
Code: Select all
apt-get update
apt-get install -y grub
cp /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* /boot/grub/

Code: Select all
grub --no-curses
grub> device (hd0) /dev/mapper/nvidia_ecaacbca
grub> root (hd0,2)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
update-grub
nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

Modify # groot=(hd0,0) to # groot=(hd0,2)

For all Ubuntu-related boot entries modify root (hd0,0) to root (hd0,2)
Code: Select all
title           Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-16-generic-pae
root            (hd0,2)
