It is. I'm on it via USB drive (4GB) though my issue is in installation device list isn't loading. LiveCD seems to work just fine, used Ubuntu 9.10's "USB Startup Disk Creator" to put it on the USB drive.

Hi, If you use unetbootin as johnnyg suggested, all you need to do is load it from the .iso in your PC. The program has an option you can either download the program then use that to download the relevent .iso onto the usb or if you have the .iso in your PC then use the program to load it. It is fairly simple to use.

Hi DarkChild,

If he/she does the above, upon first installation to internal HD will it not overwrite Windows MBR with Grub?
And then will Grub end up on cloned drive causing the machine to boot into Windows only if USB hd is connected?
I'm still pretty vague on how grub works  :)

EDIT: Assuming that Windows on the machine in the first place.

The external wouldn't pose a problem because he can always unplug it when he wants to boot into windows. All hes going to do is to go into his bios and tell the system which hd to boot from.

OR

Simply put, what he needs to do is to remove or disconnect is internal hd drive and leave the external plugin and see what happens when he tries to install the os.

Yeah, but what I was worried about is, if it is also a windows machine, what will happen to the windows MBR when installing Ultimate Edition on the internal? I would assume it would get over written by GRUB which would then get cloned to external leaving no Boot records for the machine to read (I'm kind of poking around in the dark here!!).
I had a similar problem when I did a full (not live) install to a flash drive, I forgot to tell Ultimate Edition where to put GRUB so it put it on the flash and lappy would only boot with it inserted.

By the way; Hi Copian :D DarkChild knows MUCH more than me when it comes to Linux. I'm a newb, anything I say is often a little vague
