cant boot please help trying linux once again

Postby ADPdirty » Fri Dec 11, 2009 12:21 am

Yep i still have hope for linux to run/work for me but its still doesnt.
i have 5 hard drives
device 1 partition 1 ? Well ill call it partition 0 because there is only 1 partition on it
So
Dev1 part1 Windows 7 (what a load of $#|T if u ask me lol)
Dev2 part1 Games
dev3 part1 Files
dev4 part4 Programs
dev5 part1 Storage
dev5 part2
dev5 part3
dev5 part4

Here is a thing.
dev5 is 500GB HDD so i split it in 4. 1st partition is for Storage for windows and other 3 are for linux
Mount point is as follows:
dev5 part2 mount point /
dev5 part3 mount point swap
dev5 part4 This partition used to install boot loader

Why i install boot loader there ?
Well because i dont want to touch windows boot loader.
Windows is my primary OS and i dont want to mess with its BOOT (please dont argue, my reasons beyond your understanding)
I install bootloaded for ubuntu to a separate hard drive because i can select which hard drive to boot from, so when i do it boots to windows as if dev5 had no boot information at all.

It seemed to work before when i tried linux while having XP installed, but not now :(
Do i have to have dev5 part1 for boot loader ? That would make sense actually. Or maybe dev5 part4 needs to be NTFS before ubuntu bootloader can be installed there ?
Can someone help ?

I also noticed that even now with 2.5 there is no such option to "JUST INSTALL IT". I dont relly want to waste time to load so called "LIVE" it takes time to load and its slow regardless of your computer SPECS (its running from CD, its like watching a video which is 4 GB size and 10 seconds long from a DVD. Ever tried it ? DVD just cant spin fast enough to give u 4 GB in 10 seconds, plus it has to be loaded into RAM first so i dont see much use for life but i do see the need for option "INSTALL RIGHT NOW")

Thanks in advance guys

ok a question and a comment: what are you seeing that you don't want? no GRUB at all, or what?

comment: on ubuntu, and other distros, with the "install ubuntu" option, it still loads up the entire live environment. it loads it, and launches the install wizard, and hides everything else. test me: close the installer window. boom- full live desktop ;)

So i guess it was GRUB and not Boot loader.
Thought boot loader sound's logical :(. I mean how would i know it was named "GRU"B, at this point it could be CRAB or a FROG  sorry about that i just find it funny (speaking for my self here/please dont ban me)

Anyway what i meant to say is having "GRUB" installed on Dev5 part4 still loading windows 7.
Why ?
Or should i let GRUB to install its self where it thinks i needs to be installed ?
Or can i set GRUP to install to dev5 part1, and if so, do i loose data on dev5 part1 if GRUB installs on there ?

as for "BOOM its there ;) " what a waste of resources. The "Install Right Now" should not load "LIVE" session, but load only essential components to display GUI for components such as language and partitioned and such.
And what is a distro ?

EDIT:
In adition:
MS figured that now days people do have multiple OS installed which sometimes leads to "BOOT ISSUES"
Windows 7 comes with "Boot loader" fix (Click and DONE) to eazy i'd say but it works.
Does Ubuntu have something to restore "GRUB" with GUI and couple of simple options ?
Last time i tried to restore GRUB i had to load "LIVE" session which is not working for me due to desktop being overstretched thus making me unable to see WTH is on the screen :D

thanks for quick response :)

May i ask how did you burn the iso and did you do a md5sum on the downloaded iso? Why i ask is because base on the error your getting, its saying that disc is not bootable or you have more than one disc drive and selected the wrong one to boot from. Why do you need to md5sum the iso? Because you need to validate if the iso you download copy was good.

If you want to remove ubuntu from your hard disk, all you need to do is to boot from the live disk of Ultimate Edition 2.5 or Ubuntu and use a application call gparted to format the partition that ubuntu is on!!
