Is there a mini version?

Postby szaemon » Wed May 06, 2009 3:29 am

Hi all, haven't posted for a while. Been away from the computer world...

I've heard of something I think is called a mini version or a net version for Ubuntu. If I understand it correctly, it's some kind of small download file that you install which then downloads and installs the rest of the OS live over the net. Does anything like this exist for Ultimate? I have a computer with no DVD Drive and I want to install Ultimate on it.

That's good to know... I don't have a flash drive either. Hmmm... I guess that's one more thing to pick up when I go shopping on Friday. So no mini installation, eh?...

Hey Cell, Thanks! That sounds like what I might be looking for. By minimal install, do you mean something like an Ultimate Ubuntu version with all the extra aps? So, I could install it and just get the aps from Symantic? And this would fit on a CD? If that's what you mean, then how/where do I get it? And how can I know what is missing from the minimal install so I can get all the goodies Ultimate usually comes with? Or does this install them all automatically?

I'm gonna go look for this information, but I am notoriously bad at find stuff in sites like this, so if you or anyone else drops in to read this, please explain this minimal install to me.
Thanks!

A minimal install will basically only have the necessities. Not hundreds of megs of apps. Most of the iso's are very small. In fact the one in the link is only 11 megs.I suggest you download the wifi windows driver app from the repos, and your xp driver for your wifi card.Save them somewhere safe.Better yet you can just figure out what apps you need for daily use,and just down load em on a usb,and remaster it for your own needs.Hell... you can even call it szaemon's distro. ;)If you want the ultimate look just download the theme package. That way you will have a very slimed down version of ubuntu that works for you. ;)

Thanks Cell and Artifacts! I appreciate your help, unfortunately that's not quite what I'm trying to find. I'm looking fpor the full BANG of Ultimate Ubuntu. Those sites are offering a scaled down Ubuntu (ie. not Ultimate) I understand the thinking behind the idea of "just download the mini Ubuntu and add on the rest of the Ultimate stuff " But I am NOT AT ALL computer savy. I don't know all the stuff I would need to turn Ubuntu into Ultimate Ubuntu. I just know that Ultimate works better "out of the box". It opens files and plays media that Ubuntu doesn't. Why it works better, I don't know. I only know that it does and that's what I want installed on my computer. Unfortunately, that computer has no DVD drive, so whatever OS I put on it has to fit on a CD. That's the only reason I'm looking for a mini install of Ultimate.

Thanks Again. If you have any ideas how to get Ultimate Edition on a CD, please please please let me know.
