Help & support for Ultimate Edition 3.2

Problems Installing

Postby TheGrandFinale2001 » Mon Mar 19, 2012 5:16 pm

I have had this problem with a few distros and now that 3.2 has come out I definitely want it. And I figured the smart people at Ultimate could help me out. Everytime I time I try to boot up to install I get, what I guess is a kernel panic. wherefore it's USB Install or DVD. I boot to the menu selection, and no matter what I choose I end with a bunch of text scrolling by which eventually ends up with a message saying "Rebooting in 30 seconds". Now I have tried the options avoid=off and nomodeset and those get booted in to where I can install but it eventually it starts freezing up and I can't do anything. So I'm trying to figure out what to do. I am pretty sure it has to do with my video card. Cause before I had the GTX 295 and no trouble installing anything. Now I have the GTX 580 in SLI and everything just seems shot to hell LOL. Any help would be great.

There seems to be several things that can cause a kernel panic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_panic - I get it too if I try to boot a 32 bit OS on my rig, it will only run 64 bit :!: I suppose it in my case has something to do with an factory over-clocked processor ;)

Run into a similar problem with an AMD Radeon 6870, and what I did as a work-around was to use my old Radeon 3870 to boot and install Ultimate Edition, download and install the latest AMD/ATI driver from AMD's website, then shut down and swap back over to the Radeon 6870. Hope This Helps...

this is something I found.....just copied and pasted it for you.....you said you got it to install for you with the nomodeset. Hope this helped

Did you try to run 11.10 in live mode with the nomodeset parameter? When the cd starts booting, at the first purple screen, hit Esc immediately. That should show the older type boot menu. Hit F6 for advanced options and select nomodeset. Then use the Try Ubuntu option and see if it loads the live mode correctly.

If it does, you can install but on first boot you will need to boot with the same parameter added and then make it permanent.

I posted about this on the OZ site, as this site was down

https://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum ... 317&t=3816

I can get into the Try Ubuntu using nomodeset, but then compiz crashes and I can't install.

I had no issues before with any Ultimate Installs until I purchased this eVGA GTX 550 TI

I have another card installed for my dedicated Physics, and thought of removing the GTX 550, install Ultimate Edition 3.2, and then install the card again. But such a hassle for me, or I am lazy lol :D

Update

I decided to do just that and install Ultimate Edition 3.2 x64 and it worked. I haven't added my Video card back. Will update soon

OK that worked. I then installed my eVGA GTX 550 TI, rebooted and all works well so far. :D

I love 3.2. Thanks so much TheeMahn
