I read the release announcement of Mate 1.6 at http://mate-desktop.org/2013/04/02/mate-1-6-released/ about the changes in 1.6. I read that I can “set GSettings/GConf metacity theme if compiz or metacity are running”. In other words I can change window decoration while compiz is runnig without using dconf and that's great. But then again I read in a forum that it looks like gnome 3 and that it is ugly. Has anyone tried it yet? What do you think?

No issues or complaints on my end, with Debian atleast. As far as windows decorations goes, no issues even when using fusion icon to change between gtk and Emerald with compiz runing. Plus the new MATE Black theme can look mighty nice. Otherwise looks pretty much the same. Only gnome 3 look it may have would be the gtk windows border theme. (Good Ol Gnome -no customization limitations and jumping through hoops to make it look any way you like) Caja side pane is more appealing I have noticed.

I have used mate since 1.2. It does not resemble gnome 3 at all. It is a fork of gnome 2. 1.6 is the first improvment
to the gnome 2 code. A lot of changes and more robust execution. I like your insight on many things you have posted.
Give 1.6 a shot if you like gnome 2. For me is much more productive.

I'm using Mate 1.4 on Ultimate Edition 3.4 Lite and Linux Mint 14.1 and I love it But I heard some guys complaining about Mate 1.6 Thee Mahn told me that Ultimate Edition 3.4.1 will use Mate 1.6 as it's default DE
