The thing is, some hardware ages better than others, my work machine is a home built machine that is about 6 years old (single core Atlhon 3200+), it runs 2.9 just fine. My home machine , 3 years old running a dual core Athlon does not like 2.9. But yea, distros based on LTS releases are better choices if you don't have a newish machine.

We clearly differ here.

I think your better off smart, pick a distro that has the BEST chance of offering full support.

I am a firm believer that there is a distro ideal for all.

We did some 2 year long testing on this back in 2006 to 2008.

You are 100% right.

But what we found was common denominators that played a MASSIVE part in life.

1. Heat

2. cleanliness

3. usage

4. left on or allowed to run all day played NO discernible effect.

5. quality of the hardware at start only played a 6% part. give or take 2%

6. quality of power system PSU and or UPS played a HUGE percentage as well

I will need to look up the old study. But it dealt with 400 systems over 2 years time.

Sorry this is out of context lol. It was parts from another topic, it had gotten out of topic and parts were moved here so the other topic was put back on track.

phshot and I differ on opinion about kernels support for old hardware and how long hardware was intended to live.
