help installing/compiling a program

Postby boarder428 » Thu Oct 24, 2013 10:56 pm

I installed 3.4 lite on another computer. went to install keepassx using
Code: Select all
apt-get install keepassx
and get E: unable to locate package keepassx, so I try synaptic and get no return aswell for keepassx. I have this program installed on another pc running this same distro. Not sure whats wrong. I decided to download the source and try to compile but am running into problems there aswell. I googled it and came across this website https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo and have done what it said but after changing ownership of the directory /usr/local/src it still won't let me copythe files to the directory stating "permission denied" i would really like to learn how to compile from source but this example is not working for me and am looking for some answers!

You have to be root for the above methods to work.
Also update your sources list on a new installation of an OS:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

thanks pam that worked. still wondering why the system won't update though? you think it's a bad install or something? don't have this problem on another pc with this distro installed. I'm still curious about learning to compile from source though. I have another issue getting my wireless printer too work. not sure if it's better for another post cause the problem is continuous between all my Linux distros except mint. works fine on mint 15 for whatever reason. I have the option to compile the source for the printer driver from hp's website. I'm not in front of pc right now so let me know if this should be continued here or in another post and I can supply some more info

http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2012/06/ins ... om-source/

http://www.control-escape.com/linux/lx- ... l-tar.html

If you want videos:
https://www.google.co.in/search?q=how+t ... al&tbm=vid

Installing programs from source can have many dependencies. Compiling a kernel has more dependencies than a simple program. The 2 major dependencies are :
make
gcc

Others are:
binutils
linux-headers etc etc

If the compilation fails it will notify you of the exact problems.

I've been looking over some of the links pam supplied me and thought I'd try to download and install a newer version of firefox. my distro (3.4Lite) has firefox 19 installed and i thought i would try to install firefox 25.0 so I downloaded the tar ball first i tried extracting from the terminal with no luck. I get the following when trying to extract
Code: Select all
corey@corey-Aspire-5515:~$ cd ~/Downloads
corey@corey-Aspire-5515:~/Downloads$ ls -a
.  ..  FF_DEB  firefox  firefox-25.0.tar.bz2  keepassx_0.4.3-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
corey@corey-Aspire-5515:~/Downloads$ tar -xvfj firefox-25.0.tar.bz2
tar: j: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
corey@corey-Aspire-5515:~/Downloads$ man tar

So I used the archive manager to extract the file. could not find any help files inside to explain how to compile but tried to give it a go and could not seem to figure it out. wondering if anyone has any pointers?

Code: Select all
corey@corey-Aspire-5515:~$ cd ~/Downloads/firefox

The compressed file downloaded in not compilable. It is already built and has the firefox file which is a shell executable. Think like installing a driver. You bash it.
So after you extract it, you bash it to run it.
You will need to uninstall previous version of firefox/iceweasel etc and link this executable so that the next you can open it directly by clicking or typing firefox to execute it.

Here is how you link it.
http://www.unixmen.com/install-firefox-from-source/

Have a backup secondary browser like chrome in case.

If you into too many problems, without confirming the repos will definitely have the latest .deb in them, just upgrade firefox to see whether you have 25...
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install firefox

i'm getting the idea that i'mprobably getting in over my head here. I did find a .deb on the ubuntu packages list which i did download just in case i couldnt get it figured out. I figured maybe firfox would be a good option to try out. just for kicks whats the command used for removing the program? Also, if i was to use the .deb do I still need to uninstall before installing?
