OK, I have a 3.4 lite issue. I did upgrades, and it threw me back to a default mate desktop. No Ultimate Edition theme, erased panel layout, everything. I changed the theme back through the appearance settings, and I can manually fix the panel, but is this normal? I keep wondering if there's anything else it changed that I just don't know about yet.

Do not Upgrade!

http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5184

Especially with 3.4 lite. Theemahn made some major changes to the Mate setup, so basically you wiped them out. I hate to say this but reinstalling is the best course and when it comes to updating/upgrading...

apt-get update is essential of course but when it comes to upgrading try to focus on what you are needing to upgrade specificallly to fix an issue instead of throwing the whole thing into it via apt-get upgrade and never apt dist-upgrade because you will not be moving forward to a new Ultimate Edition but you will be thrown into a buggy next version of Ubuntu.

In general I don't really like the idea of ignoring updates because old packages can be a security risk. But I found that if I just disable the MATE repository, I can update everything else and it keeps all the themes and customizations. I understand that I could be breaking something by updating, but I'd rather that possibility than always using old packages.

I understand your concerns regarding security issues, and this is certainly a determinable factor.

Personally, I stopped using Windows so I would not have to deal with security issues so much, and utilise a different method of approach. Part of this is due to the fact that if i run on a pure Ubuntu platform, my information basically gets sold to Amazon, and I do not trust large corporations such as Canonical, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, as generally the largest security risks are directly related to entrusting corporations who are far more likely to get hacked than I am, and this is not accounting for human error, or again...selling of information. In terms of keeping your information secure, do not use credit, debit etc., off drive(it can always be flashed, hacked, etc..), use a live disc or USB, do not use the same password for everything(everyone does), and if you really want some interesting reads on security, visit the various white hat sites on the internet. This is not taking into account the "Cloud", probably the most hilarious way to misinform the public and get ALL the information for free.

Thank you for reminding me about the repo!

That makes so much sense! It didn't even occur to me, but it is definitely an addition and should probably be removed/commented out before any upgrade or dist-upgrade in general Ubuntu execution.
