Upgrading from UE2.9 to Ultimate Edition 3 Lite

Postby alanrlow » Thu Aug 18, 2011 10:22 am

I have just got Ultimate Edition 3 Lite and it flies on my old laptop. My question is can I install Ultimate Edition 3 or even Ultimate Edition 3 Gamers over Ultimate Edition 2.9 (64bit) and retain all my settings and apps? I originally setup my system with home on its own separate partition so I could do this without losing everything.
I realize I will lose some apps and will need to re-download a lot, 32bit versions of everything like Virtualbox etc.
Is this a good way to breathe new life into my old laptop or can someone suggest a better way to spark it up.
I am presently running LXDE instead of Gnome and notice a speed improvement, just need to relearn a few things.. ;) Like how do I add menu items to the "start" menu?
Thanks for any help.

OK thanks for using this! The thing is, 3.0 lite, and 3.0 Gamers is a bit different animal from 2.9. Since it is built from Lubuntu it doesn't have all the features of Ubuntu, and since it was designed to be "lite" it doesn't have all the apps that 2.9 (or the soon coming full 3.0) have. My experience is that the installer didn't recognize or import the settings I had in my 2.6.1 install, but your mileage may vary. I guess I would suggest doing 2 or 3 things.
Make a list of the apps you need and be ready to instal them from scratch, and get a synchronizing plug inworking for Firefox and Thunderbird. Here is a link to the startup issue, I found it a little tough to follow, but it may help
