tried entering nomodeset yet ?

at boot when ya get to grub screen, hit esc to edit.

Add nomodeset to the end of the first boot line.

If installing with nomodeset is needed.

I will need to look over the menu again, but there should be an option to use it then to.

yep, like this.

load up to live disk and hit f6 at menu and select nomodeset

this will force drivers on disk to be used and not kernel.

Thus why your having trouble, the kernels built in drivers are to new for your GPU.

to edit it after install is also super easy.

Hold shift as you post bios to get grub loaded to show.

Hit e to edit and add nomodeset to the end like so.

I would say try it for sure.

Had, and as you can see from the earlier posts in this thread, I get a CLI screen, without any GUI. That is what I have been trying to ask for help fixing.

I had tried "sudo startx", as well as "sudo service gdm restart". No luck with either.

Hope that you might have a fix for me (and others running into this no GUI problem).

Code: Select all
sudo lxdm

should work it did for others let me know if not

Did this, no difference. No GUI. Will try Meister's lxdm option posted after your comment I am responding to. However, that is a non-Gnome interface. Isn't it?

If you mean, by old, my graphics card, you're right, but it works great. i've used it and this system with 2.6,2.7,2.8 and 2.9 with all the bells and whistles on dual monitors. Compiz runs flawlessly too. I'm happy with my system and will try some of the other suggestions to get Lite to boot up without having to sudo lxdm. it's looking really good though. excited about 3.0 coming out. thanks for your input.
