Kernel 3.0.0-10.16 Ultimate Edition 3.0 install walk-thru (updated) 9-3-11

Custom Distro with new 3.0 kernel installed and running like a freight train on the laptop in my signature. Did not install ATI, using built in drivers for video. No issues after 1 week. This laptop is about 5 years old and have had no issues with install or daily use.

Guru - tried this walk through with a fresh install of 2.9 via VirtualBox. Not sure if this is giving the problem I am seeing now. I get stuck at step 6 after trying to install the driver using gdebi as instructed. All goes well till the very end when I get a message saying "Failed to completely install all dependencies. To fix this run sudo apt-get install -f in a terminal window."
I do this with no error messages and try the driver install again but, get the same message.
I am trying it in VirtualBox because of the problems I was getting running natively in 2.9. Do you think the problem here is with the VirtualBox graphics handling. I had hoped I could run the new kernel without problems and it almost did.

I am now going to give it one last try running natively in 2.9. Watch this space...

I am going to have to say this will be limited to Natty and oneiric.

Now that I look at it dependencies are limited to that sorry.

Can it be done ? Yes

You will need to update the needed dependencies via oneiric repos.

I just don't have the time right now. I have remakes of my business distro's to finish now.

So y'all know, 3.0.0-11.17 kernels are released now.

Pct.os.hybrid.x64 and the new Penultimate edition will be native 3.0.0-11.17 out of the box.

Ultimate Edition 3.0 can like before easily upgraded to use this new kernel.

Have no Compiz at reboot.

Installed in exactly the same order as prior kernel.....trying to work it out.

What os chief ?

3.0.0-11.17 installed on my nvidia system and ati and intel and I have compiz fully working.

This needs some looking into.

Hasn't it been well stated that this is for natty or mint 11 only ?

That said, use the new thread and try the custom drivers listed to see if it works. Follow directions to the T.
