Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.8

Help with two issues, please.(SOLVED)

Postby TNT1 » Thu Mar 03, 2011 8:58 am

I installed Ultimate Edition 2.8 on two brand new Samsung notebooks. Everything works fine, including wireless, and built in camera, however two issues have arisen. If I start the machine on battery only, the BIOS, grub and splash screens are fine, as soon as I login, the brightness drops to a level where I cannot see the screen. The fn buttons to adjust brightness work, and you can see the brightness increasing, but only slightly. I mean it has the full range, but seems to start off too dark to make any difference. If I start the machine plugged in, login and then remove the power cable, it's all good. Please advise. I will post lspci and so on this evening.

Oh, and on this brightness issue, it did the exact same thing when I spun up mint10KDE, but was fine on win7 Ultimate which it came with pere-installed. It's a nVidia graphics card with the proprietary driverr installed and enabled.

The second issue is that I cannot change the default cursors. Please help.

I know this one, had to make the same fix many times on laptops.

Give me a min to find the code. BRB

Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Code: Select all
Find the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add "acpi_osi=Linux" so it looks like this GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi_osi=Linux". Save the file. Now run update-grub2.

Code: Select all
Change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor splash    "- if needed (option 2)"

Code: Select all
Change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux"

Code: Select all
sudo update-grub2

That should fix it for good.

Perfect, Thanks, I knew it must be an acpi line to edit somewhere.

And the cursor issue?

That one is easy

right click the compiz icon at the top panel.

Select window decorator - select GTK

system/preferences/appearance

Select customize theme and change pointer set.

Now go back and set it back to compiz for window decorator and now pointers are set global.

Just rebooted, well last night, looked at the other GUIs on 2.9, and KDE actually looks workable finally!
