HDD isn't seen

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.8

HDD isn't seen

Postby ma9g0t » Sun Jan 02, 2011 10:33 am

Hi people! I've got a following trouble: my HDD (Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120022, ST3120022A ATA Device, 120 GB) can't be seen while installing Ultimate Edition 2.8. I can't see it anywhere, looks like the system can't find it. It is on the IDE Channel0 as slave, with the DVD-RW (_NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A ATA Device) as master. The problem is that not only Ultimate Edition refuses to see my HDD, I also tried other ubuntu modifications (based on Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04) - same thing. BUT!!! I found an old DVD with Ultimate Edition 1.7 and... It found my HDD! After that I downloaded Ultimate Edition 1.8 - and it failed to find HDD(( Maybe I would stay on Ultimate Edition 1.7, but I can't configure a VPN connection there (I'm still newbie). Also I want to understand what is wrong and why HDD can't be seen in older versions. Someone help me, please! If you need some additional info about my system - just ask and I will provide it. But please try to explain considering that I'm newbie in Linux, I'm only beginning to study it.

ma9g0t,
You might try changing the Seagate to the Master and the CD/DVD drive to Slave and see if that makes the drive "visible" to Ultimate Edition 2.8.

BTW: could you give some info about the hardware you're using - such as: Processor (32-bit or 64-bit); memory installed; is the Ultimate Edition version you are trying to install or use a 32-bit or 64-bit version; the number and configuration of all drives in this system; whether the system is Dual/Multi-Boot or not. ;)

TexasMike, the problem is that I can't change my HDD to master. When I switch jumpers, the DVD-ROM simply disappears from BIOS. DVD-ROM is either master or not present((( I thought that might be the cause of all trouble... What about system, well... CPU - AMD Athlon Dual Core 4800+ 2,5 GHz, RAM - 2 Gb, Video - NVidia GeForce 8600 GT 256 Mb. I'm using x86 OS. It is multiboot. I also have Win7 and WinXP on the same HDD, but different partitons.

ma9g0t,
When you changed the HD jumper to Master , did you set the CD/DVD jumper to Slave? I assume the drives are ATA/IDE and NOT SATA-II, right?
If this is still a problem, you could try putting the HD on the Primary IDE controller and set it as Master, then put the CD.DVD on the Secondary controller and set it as Master also. Let me know if this helps, or if you've already tried this....

BTW: I just checked the Seagate web site for your drive's specifics, and I find that this drive has jumpers for "Master" (single drive on the controller) setting AND a "Master with Slave" (the controller has two drives on it's cable). When you set this drive as the Master with a slave drive present, you may need to use the jumpers 5-6 AND 7-8. ;)
See this Seagate link for more info: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?name=Barracuda_7200.7&vgnextoid=9d07a0cacabef010VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&locale=de-D.&reqPage=Legacy

Let me know if this helps... ;)

Problem is solved! HDD should be set to master mode. Today my DVD-RW died, so I bought a new one (SATA) and switched HDD to master. Now everything works! Thanks
