I have dropped 2.8 final (awaiting approval & feedback) to the BigBoys. Don't get your hopes up, but we may be seeing it as a reality as early as Friday.

Is there an easy way to upgrade and restore you current applications and settings?
Or do you need to do a clean install of everything again?
Thanx

What about installing with a separate /home partition? This would preserve your setting and files. In addition to saving your Markings via Synaptic, it should "help" with a reinstall and work somewhat like an upgrade. Am I on the right track?

mcarollo,
You are indeed on the correct track!
Be sure to check that "Save full state, not only changes" is checked at the bottom of the "Save Changes" dialog box. I would just copy the contents of my /home/your-username folder to someplace safe - an external drive, or a different drive internal to you system, and also do a backup of my email program and data & save to the same place as the "Markings" file and your home directory. After your new install, you can then restore all the data files you had in your home directory, restore you email backup, and the read the "Markings" file in Synaptic and apply the changes. ;)

I also use the one that JOHNNYG spoke of with a 4GB "Thumb-Drive", and it very easy to do and useful to have.
I found another "version" that I use with a 16GB SD/HC memory card in a USB reader. I have both 2.8x86 and 2.8x64 ISOs, and 2.7x64 ISO, plus Clonezilla, Partition Magic, and some other ISOs in a MultiBoot environment with persistence!! It is really useful for just what we do here!
Code: Select all
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/boot-multiple-iso-from-usb-multiboot-usb/

If ya got a memory card and a USB reader (looks just like a Pendrive, but with a slot for the card), this is a really good utility - I keep 2ea 16BG cards with all my ISOs, Diags, etc.. in my "bag" at all times. 8-)
Either way gets the job done.
