How to ATI Hybrid graphics and Beats Audio for HP users

Postby lunerceli » Tue Dec 27, 2011 8:09 am

I am writing this tutorial to help those that have been having problems with hybrid graphics (ATI + Intel HD) and those with an HP laptop that has the Beats Audio system.

First off, the graphics section. Go to the AMD support website (http://www.amd.com click on Support and Drivers) and select the the correct driver for your ATI card. Then download the latest driver. At current writing it is Catalyst 11.12 (95MB). Once you have downloaded the file, go to the download location and make sure you set it to executable. When you double click it, click run in terminal. This way it will install as 'root'. After installation is complete restart your computer. When you come back up to Ultimate Edition 3.0, or whatever flavour that you are running, and your screen goes all funky, then just hit enter, type your password and you will see the cursor change to the desktop cursor. Once you see this occur, then just restart Xserver (Ctrl+ALT+Backspace). From my experience this works 90% of the time the first time. If it does not work the first time, then do it again. You will not have to do it more than 3 times. It will go to the login screen once the ATI driver takes over correctly. The reason this happens is due to the PCI-e link between the Intel HD graphics chipset and the ATI card. That is all you have to do to get it working correctly. Now remember that when you change graphics chipsets through the Catalyst Control Center, you do have to reboot your computer. You only have to restart Xserver when it comes to starting with the ATI card, not the Intel HD.

Now for the Beats audio portion. If you are frustrated that the sub-woofer is not working like it should be or you are forced to use the crappy fall back speakers, then this is for you. All you have to do is the following:

Open a terminal window
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Scroll down to where you see "options" (It is at the very bottom of the document) and add this line to the end below the last "options" string:

options snd-hda-intel model=ref

This is what it should look like when you are done editing:
Code: Select all
# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2
install sound-slot-3 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-3
install sound-slot-4 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-4
install sound-slot-5 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-5
install sound-slot-6 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-6
install sound-slot-7 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-7

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above generic modules
install snd /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-ioctl32 ; /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq ; }
#
# Workaround at bug #499695 (reverted in Ubuntu see LP #319505)
install snd-pcm /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-pcm-oss ; : ; }
install snd-mixer /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-mixer $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-mixer-oss ; : ; }
install snd-seq /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-seq $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq-midi ; /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq-oss ; : ; }
#
install snd-rawmidi /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-rawmidi $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq-midi ; : ; }
# Cause optional modules to be loaded above sound card driver modules
install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-emu10k1-synth ; }
install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq ; }

# Load saa7134-alsa instead of saa7134 (which gets dragged in by it anyway)
install saa7134 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install saa7134 $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist saa7134-alsa ; : ; }
# Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0
options bt87x index=-2
options cx88_alsa index=-2
options saa7134-alsa index=-2
options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2
options snd-usb-audio index=-2
options snd-usb-caiaq index=-2
options snd-usb-ua101 index=-2
options snd-usb-us122l index=-2
options snd-usb-usx2y index=-2
options snd-hda-intel model=ref
# Ubuntu #62691, enable MPU for snd-cmipci
options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388
# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
# Keep snd-usb-audio from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-usb-audio index=-2

Save the file, then restart your computer and you will have all 5 speakers working correctly. If you do not have them working correctly, then go to System>Preferences>Sound and make sure that you habe Analog Stereo Duplex selected under Hardware and Analog Output under the Output tab. I hope this helps someone on here that needs it. It was quite and experience to say the least to get this all working right. Thank you and have a good day.
