Let's build a computer

Part 1
Why you ask. It's cheaper and you can give yourself a big pat on the back if you actually get it working!
You do not have to be a rocket scientist to build your own computer. If I can do it a chimp could!
The first thing to consider is how much you want to spend. The next is what you want to use it for.
If you want to game or trans code video on it you will need a more powerful cpu and more ram if you want to multi-task or boot up faster.
Computers consist of a few basic parts:
Optical drive
CPU-central processing unit
mobo-motherboard-the thing that you plug everything into
ram-random access memory
case-the thing that it all fits into
psu-power supply unit
hard drive-the thing that stores all the crap.
video card(if you plan on gaming)
An operating system-there are many free ones out there:
http://distrowatch.com/
Or if you want to waste your money you can always give it to Bill Gates!
Keep in mind if you want to build a Mac you need to buy the over priced parts from them!
Thats it!

part 2
The next part gets a little more complicated.
You now need to match the parts to make it work.
There are two main cpu manufacturers AMD and Intel.
There are many ram makers like Kingston and OCZ.
There are even more motherboard makers.
i.e.if you have an intel cpu you need an intel mobo for it to work and also you need to match the correct socket. If you have an amd cpu you will need the appropriate mobo.
Depending on the motherboard you select you also need to get the right speed and type of ram(i.e.ddr2 or ddr3). The motherboard specs will tell you which ram will work.
Get at least a 500 watt psu. That way if you want to add more hard drives later you can.
I would get at least half a gig of ram. Most operating systems run fine on that.
If you plan on over clocking your cpu you will want to get a proper cooler(the one that it comes with won't cut it). If you can afford it, get at least two hard drives. A smaller one for just the operating system and a larger one for storage. If you have a few extra bucks invest in a ssd(solid state drive). They are more expensive but have no moving parts and are generally faster.
A good place to select your components is newegg:

part 3
Now that you have done your research and have purchased your parts we are ready to assemble the parts.
Take all the stuff out of the boxes and place it on a solid table in a bright spot.
You will need a Phillips(star) screwdriver to mount the drives and video card(if you get one). You also will need motherboard mounts and screws to mount the drive(s). If your mobo did not come with these, your computer parts supply place should have them. Also SATA or PATA cables to hook up your drives.
Place the mobo on the table.
We are going to install the cpu first. Lift the metal arm and toss out the plastic insert Carefully take the cpu and cooling fan out of it' packaging trying not to touch the pins at the bottom. There is an arrow in one corner which you line up with the socket on the mobo.
It only fits in one way.
Secure the cpu into the socket with the metal arm. Make sure that you place a liberal amount of thermal paste on the cpu. Now line up the cooling fan with the holes on the mobo. Press the holders firmly in place.
Now insert the ram firmly into the ram holders. The sticks only fit in one way.
Take the sides off the case and screw the motherboard mounts inside the case(they are the brass fittings that hold the screws for the motherboard).
If you bought a case that came with a power supply then you have saved a step, if not there are four holes that hold the psu. Secure the psu to the back with mounting screws either at the top or bottom depending on the case.
Now place the mobo inside the case lining it up with the brass fittings and the holes on the motherboard.
Secure the mobo with the mounting screws. Don't tighten them too tight.Plug the cpu fan into the motherboard. Mount the drives with screws.
Next attach the SATA or PATA data cables to the motherboard and drives. You also need to attach the power cables from the psu to the drives.
We now need to insert the drives(optical or disc drive and hard drive(s) in place.
The optical drive usually goes near the top of the case and the hard drive(s) near the bottom.
If you decided to include a pci video card that will go in the pci express slot on the mobo.
Well I think that's it.

part 4
Installing the operating system
You have options here.
You can install from a USB stick, on line or from a CD or DVD.
Simply download the ISO file for your fav operating system. Either burn it to a disc or use software to put it on a flash drive.
You will need to go to a buddy's house to do this.

Part 5
installing software,tweaking and cleaning up.
Now check what you want to do with your hand built computer!
Congratulations if you have got this far!
Depending on which operating system you have decided to run you also have many options.
If you have decided to conform and go with MS so be it. If you do, you will need to install a good anti virus like AVG or Avast. Also a good firewall like Comodo.
http://free.avg.com/ca-en/homepage
http://www.avast.com/en-ca/index
http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/free-download.html
If you are running MS you need to clean it up. A good program to do this is ASC(Advanced System Care):
http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html
Most Linux operating systems have a program that will install the correct software for you. Ubuntu is a Debian based system. Synaptic Package Manager is the one for Ubuntu. The extension is .deb
Other operating sysytems use:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPM_Package_Manager
This will explain it better:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system
Also:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Packaging_Tool
The true genius of a linux operating system is installing software. It is a breeze!

I am hoping to build an el cheapo AMD soon and I think I will attempt to get my buddy to film it. That should bring a few laughs! I actually bought some software from Corel for editing DV and I'm dieing to try it out!
