NAS Drives in Ultimate Edition

I despise how manufacturers feel that we should only develop software for that other O/S < no they do not deserve me even giving a honorable mention ;)

When you feel all is lost and are ready to pull out you hair I do give honorable mention Google is your buddy & thus how I learned, yes I too learn.

John aka Goliath a great friend of mine and in which his house does my PC's crawl the net among other things purchased a 3 Terabyte NAS drive. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage & in particular a Goflex Home Network Storage System, yes I know there is better there is no keeping up with the Jone's in a computer world. I am looking at a 6 core and what do you bet when I buy one a 8 core drops ;)

Ok, this is a howto right? The first step and greatest step is to obtain your IP for the NAS, leaps and bounds are made once this information is known. There are many ways to obtain this information one is through your router provided you have one and know it's IP typically 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.100, look through your hosts and obtain the IP.

No nmap? Please do not use the tool for destructive purposes. I quit at least 10 years ago, please trust me nothing is gained in malicious activity.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nmap

I am going to show you how to nmap to obtain your NAS IP (we are not here to hack) and is no instant task as it will scan all IP's on your intranet, yes intranet not internet.

Let's crack open a terminal or terminator and goto work.
Code: Select all
theemahn@SledgeHammer:~$ nmap -sP 192.168.1.1/24

Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-07-31 20:59 EDT
Nmap done: 256 IP addresses (0 hosts up) scanned in 104.17 seconds
theemahn@SledgeHammer:~$

hmm 0, I wonder if it is because I am already connected. Lets reboot and continue.

Well now a brain fart, let me research & john moved his NAS closer for USB connectivity (drilled a hole in his desk for it), which btw does not work. I have read reviews that said the same, does not mean I leave it to the newb. dmesg says he is right on his PC.

I may write software for me, does not mean you will not enjoy such, may only be 2 lines.

I am not going to leave you hanging (please change values appropriately):
Code: Select all
sudo mount -t cifs '//192.168.101.207/GoFlex Home Personal' /mnt/NAS -o username=****,password=******,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777

Automount /etc/fstab/ , we will see. Funny, 2 lines become many. I hate the way life hands you Lemons. Ping 192.168.101.207 sounds like continue, otherwise work and I am thinking && any programmers in house that understand, I am talking bootup. I will make you famous ;) I currently do not have the time.
