Re: POST QUESTIONS/COMMENTS ON THE DEBIAN INSTALL GUIDE HERE

Ok, I assume you set your root partition to "Boot" since you're using the whole drive...I will be installing into a partition (sdb6), I will not be installing Grub (I'm just going to add Debian to my existing Grub), so I'm assuming (again LOL) that I don't need to set sdb6 to "Boot"...

INFO: I tried installing from USB stick...No Joy...the "Small Disc" installiation is set to mount and scan the CD...(no, I really didn't think that one all the way thru)...the "Mini (or Business Card) Disc is the one needed to install from USB stick.

UPDATE (4/3/09 0230): Debian wouldn't install on an Ext4 partition (Drama says developers have that in the works)...Grub not the problem...it's Debian (Drama already suspected this)...Ext4 is backward compatible to Ext3/2, etc...but Ext3 will not read Ext4...so I had to partition the Debian partition Ext3...therein also lies the Grub problem...my other Ultimate/Test partitions are Ext4, so installing Grub in the MBR would NOT pick up my Ultimate partitions...by adding the Debian partition into the existing Grub (Ultimate), I can boot into Debian

New problem: I can't get internet connection (yet)...I'm using an Alltel UTStarcom (Pantech) UM150 USB Wireless Dongle (it's not a Broadband Wireless device like some think, it's like hooking your mobile phone to your PC and getting internet that way, except this is an USB Dongle)...in Ultimate, the Network Manager automatically picks it up as a "Mobile Broadband CDMA" device...Working on how to get this setup in Debian...

Other than what I've stated above, Debian installed and boots up fine...all Thanks to Drama's How-to <BREW> <BREW>

Yes i did. my partition scheme was as follows

partition bootable mountpoint type filesystem
SDA1 YES / PRIMARY EXT3
SDA2 NO EXTENDED
SDA5 NO LOGICAL SWAP

SaddleTramp wrote:I will be installing into a partition (sdb6), I will not be installing Grub (I'm just going to add Debian to my existing Grub), so I'm assuming (again LOL) that I don't need to set sdb6 to "Boot"...

You shouldnt have to set the bootable flag no. As described HERE

This is what it says (its a debian and slackware example but it shouldnt be any different)

If you install the boot loader in the root partition of a Linux it becomes "chainloadable", meaning you can boot it as a Windows by another boot loader.

Therefore the easiest life in dual boot a Debian and a Slackware is to install the boot loader of Debian in the MBR and the one in Slackware in its root partition.

If the root of Slackware is sda6 then it will be bootable by Debian's Grub by these lines in its menu.lst

Code: Select all
Slackware in sda6 known to Grub as (hd0,5)
root (hd0,5)
chainloader +1

The same technique can be used from the 3rd to 200th Linux if you have enough hard disks.

So according to this example i would think the most you would need to do is when asked by debian if you want to install grub to the mbr choose "no". It will then give you the option to specify where you want it. You could safely use /dev/sdb6 without it interfering with your "main grub".

Of course be sure to change (hd0,5) in the above example to (hd1,5) <-----i believe that would be correct anyway. I'm horrible with grub.

Edit: Damn you beat me to it. Was replyin while you were still editing. Glad to hear you had a relatively smooth install though. <BREW>

P.S. I will be adding more to the tutorial as soon as i manage to successfully install and boot from a usb hd. I got it installed but keep getting grub errors. First was error 17 (i believe...maybe it was 18). So i reinstalled with a 200mb /boot partition (ext3) then a 20gb / (ext3) and 1gb swap. Tried installing grub to mbr. Now it gives me error 2. Also tried /dev/sda1 (my /boot partition) still same error 2. Idk maybe i cant isnatll to a usb hdd or something.

Had originally used vmware under windows (nix boxes are broken) to do the tutorial as is currently stands. Quickly realized that pc wasnt beefy enough to use it in a vm. Got slow as a snail and the vm even started crashing about halfway through the lenny--->squeeze upgrade.

All i could find is THIS

However unfortunately it requires the first dvd (just to use as a temp repo NOT to do a fresh install) so can install xorg gnome-core kppp resolvconf wvdial pppconfig.

The best Grub (he also has SuperGrub) reference I've found...
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p15.htm#2_

hermanzone says: 17: Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

hermanzone says: 2: Bad file or directory type
This error is returned if a file requested is not a regular file, but something like a symbolic link, directory, or FIFO.

Since your running in VM, maybe it has something to do that Debian is really not using it's drivers (my understanding), it's all going thru the windows drivers and that could be a problem with some things working like they're suppose to...

Thanks for the info up there...no problem d'lng the DVD...gotta do whatcha gotta do LOL

Thanks for that info. I'm gonna try it again this evening. Going to burn a copy of supergrub too just in case it could help.

Very good point. I'm also thinking one of the reasons why i had performance issues is due to having such a low amount of ram. 512mb installed. 64mb of that is taken by my onboard graphics. could only assign the vm 256mb. but it would randomly crash unless i only assigned 128mb.

I'm sure you already know how to add a cd/dvd as a repo. But just incase

switch to root
Code: Select all
su -

enter your pass

Code: Select all
apt-cdrom add -a

Thank you pch. It's still very much a work in progress. The main object i had behind it is to not only show how i do an install. But to also show how your can start with a command line install and build up from there only using what you need. Removing as much "bloat" as possible. Not that its severely bloated if you install everything during the initial install. But doing it the way im showing does make it leaner. Just as an example.

Default gnome-desktop install: 530 packages 440mb downloaded requires 1100mb of space.

Gnome-core install: 315 packages 200mb downloaded requires 540mb of space.

Yes "gnome-core" does lack some functionality but it can easily be added as needed without pulling in everything gnome offers.

Light as a feather too. check this out (shortly after installing gnome-core)

Not sure why the cpu is at 14% though. Right now its going between 2 and 4%. Memory usage is at 175mb (90mb of that is iceweasel debian debranded firefox). Have 6 tabs open, text editor open, terminal open, a folder open with about 20 images in it, and system monitor open.

Top output (i dont know the difference between the virtual and resident memory though). No swap used.

Thats coming up soon. Had some issues booting from my usb hard drive and that took me a few days to get sorted. Have tutorial done up through an install of gnome-core. Configuration is coming. Hope to have that done and posted by monday evening. Will just be gnome at first. I plan on adding enlightment and xfce and lastly kde sections in the coming week or so though. That might take some experiment on my part though as ive never used either one in my life.

Let me know if its successful. Try to keep a list of exacatly what packages it installs (including dependencies). If it works i think i might make a "pack" that contains all those packages and keep it updated so if anyone in the future comes across that issue they can just grab the pack instead of downloading the whole dvd.

Fixed my usb boot grub issue too. Had me about to pull my hair out because it would give me "error2". It would boot fine as long as i had the supergrub cd in the drive and used that to boot. But i would have to use it everytime i booted. If i rebooted and took it out i would get error2 again. Used an ultimate edition live dvd and used "boot from first hard disk" and it boot into my debian install just fine. Messed around for liek 3 more hours with different settings in the menu.lst. No luck. Finally i hit "esc" at boot one time. Thats how i get to my bios boot menu (lists all my boot devices) selected my usb drive and bam it booted it just fine. Not sure why i have to do it that way but it boots everytime as long as i select my usb drive from the boot menu.

Several posts added to the tutorial too

Initial update/adding contrib non-free to sources.list (equal to multiverse and universe)

Upgrade from lenny to squeeze "testing"

Adding debian-multimedia repo and installing xserver

Installing gnome-core and optionally setting up sudo as well as installing gdm

' Removing as much "bloat" as possible.'
I personally like bloat. I have 4 gigs of ram and 2 250 gig hard drives so I don't really care. My Ultimate install is close to 10 gigs. Now with Windows, I am a lot more concerned about it because bloat does slow things down, but with Linux it seems to make no never mind. For people with older computers and low ram it definitely matters. My solution has always been to add more ram. It usually solves most everything.
