Re: POST QUESTIONS/COMMENTS ON THE DEBIAN INSTALL GUIDE HERE

Ok, I assume you set your root partition to "Boot" since you're using the whole drive...I will be installing into a partition (sdb6), I will not be installing Grub (I'm just going to add Debian to my existing Grub), so I'm assuming (again LOL) that I don't need to set sdb6 to "Boot"...

INFO: I tried installing from USB stick...No Joy...the "Small Disc" installiation is set to mount and scan the CD...(no, I really didn't think that one all the way thru)...the "Mini (or Business Card) Disc is the one needed to install from USB stick.

UPDATE (4/3/09 0230): Debian wouldn't install on an Ext4 partition (Drama says developers have that in the works)...Grub not the problem...it's Debian (Drama already suspected this)...Ext4 is backward compatible to Ext3/2, etc...but Ext3 will not read Ext4...so I had to partition the Debian partition Ext3...therein also lies the Grub problem...my other Ultimate/Test partitions are Ext4, so installing Grub in the MBR would NOT pick up my Ultimate partitions...by adding the Debian partition into the existing Grub (Ultimate), I can boot into Debian

New problem: I can't get internet connection (yet)...I'm using an Alltel UTStarcom (Pantech) UM150 USB Wireless Dongle (it's not a Broadband Wireless device like some think, it's like hooking your mobile phone to your PC and getting internet that way, except this is an USB Dongle)...in Ultimate, the Network Manager automatically picks it up as a "Mobile Broadband CDMA" device...Working on how to get this setup in Debian...

Other than what I've stated above, Debian installed and boots up fine...all Thanks to Drama's How-to <BREW> <BREW>

The best Grub (he also has SuperGrub) reference I've found...
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p15.htm#2_

hermanzone says: 17: Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

hermanzone says: 2: Bad file or directory type
This error is returned if a file requested is not a regular file, but something like a symbolic link, directory, or FIFO.

Since your running in VM, maybe it has something to do that Debian is really not using it's drivers (my understanding), it's all going thru the windows drivers and that could be a problem with some things working like they're suppose to...

Thanks for the info up there...no problem d'lng the DVD...gotta do whatcha gotta do LOL

' Removing as much "bloat" as possible.'
I personally like bloat. I have 4 gigs of ram and 2 250 gig hard drives so I don't really care. My Ultimate install is close to 10 gigs. Now with Windows, I am a lot more concerned about it because bloat does slow things down, but with Linux it seems to make no never mind. For people with older computers and low ram it definitely matters. My solution has always been to add more ram. It usually solves most everything.
