Installing 32bit programs on a 64bit system

Postby LeadFingers » Tue Dec 23, 2008 1:28 am

Got a handful of packages that only come in the 32bit flavor but don't want to sacrifice the x64 advantage?
The good news is... You don't have to! You can now have the best of both worlds.

getlibs will install all the 32bit dependencies, for a .deb or binary, on a 64bit OS.
No that's not a typo, you can run 32bit games in x64.

Cappy's download page

Download getlibs-all.deb (the one you prolly want) here
http://www.boundlesssupremacy.com/Cappy/getlibs/getlibs-all.deb
Since it's a .deb, you just double click to install it.

For those of us that can't look at a piece of software and intuitively know how to use it,
there's a good How-To here

Yes it's old, but the info is still good.

For a binary, the hardest part is knowing the whole address to where you have it parked.
In a terminal type
Code: Select all
getlibs /complete_address_to/name_of_package

of course you need to change complete_address_to with the actual address for where you parked it
and name_of_package should be self explanatory.

Run that command until it tells you all the dependencies are installed.
double click on the package's executable to run it.
