Resize partitions

Postby nexrad7526 » Sat Nov 15, 2008 3:04 pm

Thanks TheeMahn for an awesome 2.0. Okay, so I have 2.0 (32) installed dual boot with XP. I have /riser, swap and /home. My error was not recognising that the /home would take up so much room and now it's nearly full, about 500mb remaining but my /riser partition has 36gig free. I want to shrink the /riser and give about 15gig to /home. What's the best way to proceed with out goofing anything up? I tried system>admin>partition editor and that won't work. Says I have to unmount manually. Im not at all educated with the terminal cmds.

Is it best to reinstall and make the right size partitions?

Thanks!

Resizing partitions with Windows is always an adventure. If you have your xp installation disc I would suggest starting from scratch. Using a program like qtparted set up your partitions first and then install Windows on the first partition and then Ultimate on the second and a Linux swap partition on a third. If you want to set up more partitions that is up to you.
p.s. Just to be on the safe side download and install this first: http://www.macrium.com/ and make a backup of your xp install just in case something goes bonkers.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should have been more clear about starting over. I meant the Ultimate Edition install and not the XP. XP would be a huge undertaking. Sounds like rather than trying to resize my /reiser and /home it might be better to install Ultimate Edition over again?

Re-install Ultimate and use manual install. That is the best way. You may still want to use Macrium to backup your xp install just to be on the safe side.

ok since Im going to that what might you recommend for partitioning. In the past Ive done /root (rieser), swap (2gig) and a /home.

No need to start over with a new install. Here is what I did in case anyone else sets their partitions up, installs and then discovers that they didn't allow enough space.

1. Do any backups you need just in case all go afoul
2. Boot using the Ultimate Edition 2.0 install disk
3. Run Ultimate Edition from the disk, don't install
4. System>Administration>Partition Editor
5. Make the changes; shrink, extend, etc.
6. Apply the changes (this may take some time so go out and mow the lawn like I did and hope for the best <BREW> )
7. Reboot
8. BANG!

That worked for me. I even deleted my swap and moved it to the end rather than between / & /home.

Good luck!

I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed with Windows Vista, but now I want to install Ultimate Edition 2.0. Is there anyway i can get rid of the Ubuntu 8.10? and just have Vista and Ultimate Edition 2.0?
