Install VirtualBox 2.0 w/USB support - UE2.0 - Ubuntu 8.10

This is even easier than in 8.04

Add the repo to the sources.list
Code: Select all
echo 'deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian intrepid non-free' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Download and install the source pgp-key
Code: Select all
wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/sun_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Update the sources lists
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Install VirtualBox and an additional needed package
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-2.0 dkms

You'll get a notice telling you to add desired users to vboxusers group, after the installation finish do this
Code: Select all
sudo gpasswd -a $USERNAME vboxusers

USB Support:
Edit /etc/fstab
Code: Select all
sudo vi /etc/fstab

scroll to the end and paste this
Code: Select all
#usbfs
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=46,devmode=664 0 0

Save, exit and make it active
Code: Select all
sudo mount -a

You can see the usbfs is now mounted
Code: Select all
tail -1 /etc/mtab
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw,devgid=46,devmode=664 0 0

Now you can run VirtualBox, add a new machine, enable the USB and you're ready to go!

Hope you find this helpful
Ziv

Hi nick and zivley, When I installed vbox on 8.04 I had to use the terminal method, but when I switched to 8.10 I just installed virtualbox 2 from synaptic package manager, then went to users and groups and gave myself permission to use it and whappo ! Done ! I couldn't believe it, it was so simple. All I had to do then was configure my settings in vbox and everything is working fine. I'm sorry to say virtual box OSE did not work as it had no USB option.

If you feel like having some fun, Dragonfly, go to this link: http://bagside.com/
I actally like VMPlayer better than Virtualbox. I have a dual core processor, and you can hack the vmx configuration file of VMPlayer and enable the virtualbox to use both cores and do all kinds of other cool things.

Hi pch, sorry I don't have a dual core, I have a $100 used computer to work with. It has 80GB and 17GB of that is used. I think I will stick with what I have for now as I just got Windows Xp running and am using it to scan documents with viewpoint media player. I don't want to go through loading windows again. LOL
