KDE makes itself the default desktop manger

Postby balaji » Mon Aug 09, 2010 2:53 am

Im not so familiar with KDE (but it was my first linux attempt at 2005 :P ) i like Gnome its just sleek and professional.
KDE is cool but it look more of a bloat and funky style.
Anyway, my problem is that i tried once logging into KDE there came a death trap when i startup my computer it automatically logs into KDE as its desktop manager.

I've tried a lot of ways including uninstalling kubuntu
Code: Select all
sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop

and also tried reconfiguring GDM
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfiguration gdm

but nothing worked out, computer logs in directly using KDE as a desktop manager.

I know that i can make the login screen to wait and let us select which desktop manager to use.
But i want to know a solution to make gnome as default desktop manager and want it to load using automatic login option.

Please help me !
Thanks.

Hello balaji.

Try this commands in your terminal:

Code: Select all
gnome-shell --replace

a start up program for gnome-shell or

Code: Select all
metacity --replace

Hello Amir,

The program 'gnome-shell' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
prakash@prakash-desktop:~$ gnome-shell --replace

Hello balaji .

Please Look on your errors and see that you do not have the Gnome install on your system.
In U.E the Default is Gnome !
So or your Burn is corrupted/OR/your MD5 is corrupdet/OR/ you have Burn the ISO very fast.
Please First verify the MD5 and see if it is correct and match the original MD5.
If it is correct, then try to Burn the ISO on X4.

From the other hand please install your Gnome on the system.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

Amir, yes i can understand that gnome is the default desktop manager for Ultimate Edition and gnome was starting as the default desktop manager untill i switched to KDE. From the time i switched to KDE it became my default desktop manager and i can go inside gnome only after logout and login.
I have also verified MD5 of the downloaded image and its exactly same as you have provided in the download page.
PS: gnome windows sometimes becomes borderless is that a sign of badly burnt image file ?
I think i got to try reinstalling Ultimate Edition, any suggestions !

balaji,

reinstalling Ultimate Edition is Good idea here ,
I do not use the KDE no more , there was A time that I use to work with the KDE.
But now the KDE take allot of resources from the machine.
And there are to many Bugs with the KDE so , I just let it go.
Well you do not know that ,
but back then I was made the PCLinuxOS Re master Distro 2007.
So in my point of view the Gnome is the best way to work with U.E Systems.

I dont that there errors in KDE but somehow it seems unstable, thanks for this information.
Am bruning the iso of Ultimate Edition and will be installing it freshly in some minutes.
Ill update here whether the gnome-shell is installed or not and also about the KDE problem.
And if KDE does the same trouble again ! no other way then ?

balaji ,

Here is my Advice to you.
Download Parted Magic ,then Burn it to Disk.
Aster you have done with the Burning,Restart your machine (with Parted Magic inside),
Boot the system up,then Delete all the partitions +Ubuntu.
Make the HDD UNALLOCATED and Apply the changes.
Then insert the U.E System and run the installation process.
Just make sure that the ISO MD5 is correct, and you Burn in speed of X4 the ISO.

Amir, im having parted magic as a backup but i wanted to know how it differs from installing Linux through native partition manager (builtin with installer).
Does it has any special provisions to ensure about the sectors on HDD ?

balaji,

If you have the last release of Parted Magic then you know you have the best tools there.
Way to do it with Parted Magic?
For me it is the best clean way to get your installation to be done perfect.
So if it is good for me = it will be fine for you.
Now I tell you the Truth, this is the best software that I ever work with.
If you need Guide the is one on the How To ;)
