CUPS printing problem ... [SOLVED]

Postby marty6 » Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:26 pm

Hi,

Just wanted to know if anybody could help me with getting CUPS and a HP Deskjet 3930 printer to work together? I have seen on the hp site as well as reading several posting here and the ubuntu forums. I can't seem to find out how to get this printer to work. I have seen the test page go to the print queue but the printer sits idle.

Here are some settings so far:

Desc: Generic CUPS-PDF Printer
Location: blank
Device URL: cups-pdf:/
Make and Model: Generic CUPS-PDF Printer
Printer State: Idle

I don't think that there is a ppd file for this printer.

thx,

marty6

Admin-Amir,

I have look at the pictures that you have posted. I was missing a few of the selected files. However, I still have a problem with printing. The printer remains at 'idle' after doing a test page.

thx,

As you can see I have HP and it work out of the box + few packages that I needed.
but all works just fine - scan work fine, printer works fine.
So if you add the packages make sure to configure your printer.

Admin-Amir,

Here's what I have: As you can tell, I have 2 printers. The Deskjet 3900 or rather the 3930 can print pdfs etc... I was trying to get the Generic Cups PDF Printer to print pdfs but it just doesn't want to do anything.

BTW. Do you upload your pictures to a separate website then link to your posts or upload to the Ultimate Edition website? Then only thing I know how to do is upload file attachments. I would not mine a lesson here :D
Update: Just figured it out ... "place in line" :D

Admin-Amir,

When you see the next attachment, I added the cups-pdf:/home/marty6/PDF/ to the Device URI. In the file browser to the left you'll see the test page pdf created when I pressed the Print Test Page button. My question is if the cups pdf printer creates a file to the folder, will it send it to the printer and print it?

thx,

marty6

marty6,

way you need to print test?
make PDF file in open office you have the option to extract the file as PDF,
Then save it on your Desktop - and open the file on your Desktop and hit the print.
you can change the place that you want to save the file in the right side,
save it in your Home folder, from there double click on the file => sent to printer.

Admin-Amir,

Thank you for your help. I figured out that the cups pdf program only "prints" pdf files or rather "saves/converts" files to a specified folder. At first I thought that this virtual printer was for printing actual documents to a printer. Upon further investigation this is a pretty cool program.

Thanks again!!

so give us detail of what your needs are please.

FYI

often these cups drivers come with multiple options.

by clicking make and model in printer settings and selecting one of the other offered drivers often fix the issue.

HP for one has been known to offer up 2 to 3 drivers for one printer. One will be the ticket for your printer, just find it.
