Need some help been experimenting w/ 2.7 [SOLVED]

Postby marty6 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 1:08 pm

Hi!

I would like to know how to copy my /home partition to another partition as a backup. I think that I messed 2.7 somehow. Recently, I had 2.5 running w/ a separate /home partition. I backed up my sources.list on a usb stick as well as any ppa's. Upon installing 2.7 I kept my /home partition with the old settings. I continued w/ an install of my progs. While looking in the terminal I noticed that 2.7 was going to be deleted and I guess 'was' to an extent. When 2.7 boots up I get the xfce desktop. Can't figure that one out. I do have my 'old desktop' from 2.5. All the icons are there. Before I proceeded with the install of the programs that I was missing, I noticed that the entire environment was really slow. I guess this was due to most of the programs not being there.

Well, what I want to do now, and this is where I need the help, is to
1. copy the /home partition to another partition (which is an empty 'primary' partition). <-- don't know how to do this  as well as copying back the 'new' backup copy of the /home partition to its original location <--- don't know how to do this either

2. Reinstall 2.7. <-- I can do this :D

3. While reinstalling I am considering 'formatting' over the /home partition. After the reinstall, I'm considering 'copying' the backed up /home partition to the new /home partition and then reinstalling all old programs. Guidance and opinions needed here :D

Thanks,

marty6

Hello marty6 and welcome to the U.E Forum.

Did you have try to use Back in Time?
Back in Time will make snap shot from your Home/Directory/Folder/File...
Then you can Back up the snap shot out of your Drive.
After you will end with the mess that you have there,
Just add back the snap shot - open it with Back in Time and send all that you have there to the place you want.
If you want to Back up Partition - Then you can use clonezilla to extract the partition/Drive to the other HDD....
Good Luck.

Hi,

I completely reinstalled 2.7 and reformatted the /home partition. Everything is ok, however, the kernel / Nvidia drivers are not working well together. Is anyone running a fresh install of 2.7 without upgrading the kernel and what Nvidia driver are you using?

I can upgrade my kernel...that's not the issue. I'm just trying to get a vid driver to work. I was getting an error with either one of these drivers:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31-pkg2.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run

Reason why I was going to go with one of these drivers was to get my NVClock prog working with the NV control extensions. The extensions were not there! So, I'm kind of stuck at this point.

The 2.6.32-22 kernel is a problem. It should install using the -21 kernel. There has been a lot of discussion about this already here
2.7 Nvidia Video Cards issues please post here.
and
2.6 Nvidia issues post here please.

Since 2.6 and 2.7 were both built off of Lucid they both have the -22 kernel. You can find a lot of info. on it in those 2 threads. Too much for me to add in one post, sorry.

Just wanted to update:

Blackwolf's posting towards the bottom of the page here helped me fix my issue with the video driver. I was able to get NVClock working again! <BREW>
