Video problems starting from 2.7 installation media

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.7

Video problems starting from 2.7 installation media

Postby rcarlisle » Sun Jun 13, 2010 12:59 pm

My experiences with Ultimate Edition 2.5 and 2.6 were so surprisingly smooth and enjoyable, that I can't wait to give 2.7 a whirl. Thanks to all involved for your hard work and dedication. <BREW>
I am experiencing some trouble with the installation of 2.7. When I start from the DVD, I can select the keyboard type and then installation type (Installation, installation in safe graphics mode, OEM, etc). When I proceed beyond that point, the display cannot sync on the video signal. It appears that the disc is booting, but the display will not work.
- I have verified the downloaded ISO image with MD5.
- I have verified the burned disk against the ISO.
- I have tried installing in safe graphics mode.
- I have tried a special parameter (vga=771) in the boot options.
So far, I am unable to get my display working during installation. My recollection was a similar problem in 2.6, but I was able to work around that in safe graphics mode. That does not appear to be working with 2.7. I am sure there is a solution, but I have exhausted my own resources looking for it. Hoping some one here has a suggestion.
Many thanks!
Rob

Try vga=773.

or...

When you boot the liveCD, select your language and highlight but DONT hit enter the "Try Ubuntu Without Installing" option. Then, hit ESC and look for the line that ends in:
Code: Select all
ro quiet splash

and change it to:

Code: Select all
ro i915.modeset=0

the above is for Intel
below is for nvidia

Code: Select all
ro nomodeset

The Display is black? Have you got new hardware? If yes, try to boot with the "noapic" option.

So, just a note in hopes this will help others in the same predicament I found myself in. After the installation, I was plagued by the problem I found booting up from the installation media. Repeated attempts of the display to sync, unsuccessfully. I have a nVidia graphics card and these are the steps I took to work around the problem.
Since Ultimate Edition is the only operating system I use on my computer, I had to hold the shift key down as the last screen of BIOS information was displayed to get the grub menu to appear.
- hit the e key to edit the grub configuration.
- find the line in the configuration that contains "quiet splash" and add "nomodeset" (if you have a nVidia display adapter. Other adapters may require different parameters here. Cell's post has them listed.)
- press ctrl-x to continue to boot up. (if the problem persists, review the steps above).
Once started up (with a working display) and logged in, I then edited the grub configuration in /etc/default/grub
- locate the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
- Add "nomodeset" to that line (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset") - again, look to Cell's post for parameters that may work for other adapters.
- execute sudo update-grub
A reboot at this point should have the problem resolved.
Thanks again for an excellent distro and excellent support here in these forums!
