Hi there all,

Let me just firstly start by saying that i discovered ubuntu 2.0 Ultimate Edition a few years ago,i didnt spend much time with this....i regret that now.

At the moment i am running ubuntu 2.7 in VMware 7.0 which is in windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

My system spec :

Windows 7 64bit ultimate
gigabyte s board/nvidia c,set
4 gb ddr 2
2 x nvidia 8600 gts (sli)

I cannot beilive how much of a beautifull linux distro this is,it includes all you need....
I did have 1 major problem though, because i installed off a virtual drive, when i got into the desktop i had complete freeze up,so i installed of the disk in the physical drive....and voila.......no problems :)

You have surely made bill gates open his eyes up here, this is one hell of a gorgeous bit of kit ! :ugeek:

I am going to do a full hd install when 2.8 is released...b 4 then though i might install the gamers edition,i hear theres some hard competion.....bring it on

Thank you to everyone who has made ubuntu Ultimate Edition. <BREW>

A (probably dumb) question about the kernel update. Must this be done even if you have automatic updates enabled and frequently update everything ? IE the "system update" function doesn't update the kernel ?

Also , would it be safe to take the newest one there , or should one stick to the version you have in the walkthrough ?

No question is dumb either !!

Very keen to get home now and see what version kernel I have. There was a ton of updates after install and I downloaded and installed all of them. So I should already be on the correct kernel then. There were so many I don't recall seeing a kernel update.

But the highest Lucid kernel on that site is 2.6.34 (generic) , not 2.6.32. That's what is confusing me. Or am I missing something

Ok my kernel was the same as yours .32 , so the update manager does not update the kernel. I did the manual update to .34 as per the how-to. Running on 2.6.34-020634-generic now.

But .34 is not a RC kernel. .35 is the RC kernel. According to the naming on that site .34 is the latest main Lucid kernel. So according to that site .34 is the last updated kernel , but update manager doesn't update to it. You understand my confusion ? I can understand that it won't update to a RC kernel , but .34 is not a RC. (I'm refering to the 2.3.34-Lucid , not to all the .34 RC's)

Hello Mazal.

this is correct , 2.6.34 is the main Release of the Lucid kernel.
well until now it is good kernel (2.6.35 will be very good one).
But yet it is on the RC process to the 2.6.35 Final.
I do not see any problem to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.34 for now.

That's why I don't understand why update manager doesn't update it. Unless 2.6.34-Lucid is also a RC but is not named as an RC ?

Mazal,

as you can see on the server - 2.6.34 is Release Kernel with out RC on him.
when you see the NO of the Kernel with out the RC next to the Kernel Number it say that the Kernel is complete.
For the question on the way?
every Distro chose the Kernel that work in the best way with the software that they have compiled the packages for the Distro based on the Kernel that they supply with.
So just for the record - I work with the 2.6.36-15 RC for all the tests for Ultimate Edition
I can not ask the Users to install Kernel that was not Release to the Public as Released Kernel officially.
Just for the users that runs the test systems.
