After 24 hours of no sleep,i got everything up and running,even set up a dual boot with windows 7 after getting grub back,thanks guys for all your assistance

Usually turn on my computer desktop, so the bar is missing altogether. Desktop background image is displayed normally, but the top and bottom bar missing.

Only what works is ALT + F2 function. You can find all the programs I can use.

This problem IS NOT Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Mint 9 64-bit

I always use the automatic log on. I have not tried that resolves the issue when I log in manually.

I tried your fix at the start of this post. The only difference was I did not use Lucid Lynx. I thought I would look for a later update. Guess what, I found one. (Very Possibly a stupid one ). I installed 2.6.37.9 maverick. Now I do not know if it could work, I took a chance.
Anyway, it installed and (almost) everything works. The machine definitely runs faster and smoother but this is where I need your advice.

My compiz-fusion stuff does not work, nor does my openGL-Cairo (though the basic cairo dock works). I have updated the Cairo through synaptic, have rechecked the settings but it won't work. Please point me in the right direction for troubleshooting - thanks

well now First of all Kernel 2.6.37.9 can not be on any server to down it yet!!!
The last Kernel vanilla (Ubuntu Kernel is - v2.6.35-rc6-maverick/)= 2.6.35-17-18-19.
so you are 2 kernels foreword then the release for testers.
So on this time it is correct that you will have problems with the system with software.
The reason will be the not ready /not supported packages to be release on public.
Any way - you can first install the package from Ubuntu Tweak in the Compiz manager of the sample package.
just make and install the package = this will get Compiz going for you.
(just hope that your Driver for the video card was installed in Advanced).
