Hello ump001.

Here is How To for you, hope this will solve your issue.

[HowTo]: Fix suspend and hibernate on laptops

First get uswsusp:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install uswsusp

Now, test out suspend to see if it works:

Code: Select all
sudo s2ram

If this does not work, you can use:

Code: Select all
sudo s2ram --force

Next, try out hibernate:

Code: Select all
sudo s2disk

Now, if one or both of these commands work and you would like to use them, we need to change the command on the shutdown menu to this.

Note: This part is for FEISTY AND GUTSY ONLY!!! The scripts in Edgy are stored in "/usr/share/hal/scripts" and have different names AFAIK. If someone running Edgy could tell me what the files names are I will add it here.

First, backup your original files:

Code: Select all
sudo cp /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux.bak

Code: Select all
sudo cp /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-hibernate-linux /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-hibernate-linux.bak

Now, edit these two files and replace all the code with this:

hal-system-power-suspend-linux

Code: Select all
sudo gedit /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux

Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh

/sbin/s2ram --force

hal-system-power-hibernate-linux

Code: Select all
sudo gedit /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-hibernate-linux

Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh

/sbin/s2disk

if this breaks stuff, just restore the backup files you made.

hi,

thanks for your help so far.

This seems to work fine, sudo s2disk, however when amending the the file hal-system-power-hibernate-linux, with the s2disk command, i try the hibernate option from the top menu and it still seems to default to the old method of just switching off.

Anything i might be doing wrong?

hi,

there have no changes, i have upgraded via terminal and synaptic, the file i updated is still intact.

One other issue i now have is the command no longer works? this first happened when i tried to hibernate while having a number of apps running. Now nothing happens, the system tries to hibernate and I'm left with a blank screen and i have to hard reset.

hi,

Thanks have updated the Kernel.

However, this has not helped., when i hibernate the screen just goes blank and nothing happens.
Do i need to reapply the s2disk commands in the Hibernate file?

Also i've lost my ubuntu load up screen when the laptop boots up.

Thanks.

I'm having an issue with the hibernating / suspend as well. Though with mine if I close the lid, it seems the HDD shuts down and refuses to wake causing me to do a hard reboot. I've got the settings in the power manager set so the laptop should do nothing. I guess that includes waking up lol.

Hopefully I can get this sorted, 2.7 is an awesome build, my ati vid card actually worked right off the bat which it never did that in previous builds.

only other issues I've ran into so far is my network is always disabled upon startup, and I'm not able to run any installed programs through wine except the pre-installed notepad. Though that is more than likely an install problem.

My laptop is about 2 years old now it's a Toshiba satellite a215-s5849 which ran 2.5 fairly well.
