Touch pad / Touchpad - cursor erratic when typing

Postby tittiger » Tue Oct 12, 2010 2:36 pm

I am posting here mainly to document my solution so that others may find something when searching on "touch pad" or "touchpad" as I could find nothing.

The issue that was driving me nuts was that when I typed the cursor would end up all over the place. It was maddening to say the least and made it almost impossible to type at any speed.

Long story short - I just found a configuration setting under System -> Preferences -> Mouse The last tab of this window is "touch pad" and there is a selection called: "Disable touch pad when typing"

After you select if make sure it takes as it did not the first time that I tried.

It works much better than before. My only suggestion is to be able to adjust the period of time from when the app thinks you stopped typing and restores touch pad function. i.e. If I type too slowly the touch pad becomes active and the chaos start anew.

Feedback:

After a few hours this is still a big problem. It's better but not close to being tolerable....

I can only hope that it is addressed in V2.8

A saving grace that I have discovered is multiple levels of ctrl-Z. (unlike Windoze)
I works and took a few hours to discover. I had also forgotten about ctrl-Y
but Google reminded me about it.

TIA -- Joe

2 parts: update manager and Ubuntu tweak

Postby tittiger » Wed Oct 13, 2010 2:35 pm

I have more questions than answers at this point - so here goes:

I used Ubuntu Tweak to point my usr/home directories to the directories on my NTFS data partition. (see attachment) It plain does not work; I am not redirected to the correct partition.
I went to http://ubuntu-tweak.com and registered only to find that they offer no
documentation or help forum it seems. Maybe they are just harvesting email address's?

Anyhow I saw that there was a newer version of Ubuntu Tweak and when I tried to DL it GDebi package installer was the default so I stopped not knowing if I should update and/or if I should use the synaptic package manager somehow instead.

My other question is that update manager popped up offering 422 "Important security updates" of 600 meg in total!
I looked and none of them seem to apply to Ubuntu Tweak (though I see no search function in update manager)

My short question here is that my Ubuntu partition is only 15 gigs. Should I go ahead and let package manager do it's thing on all 422 files?

These seem to be the most pressing issues. I am eager to learn the basics but not sure where to go. Because of the nature of the beast the docs if they exist seem to be spread all over the place.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the newest "Lucid" and "Maverick" Ubuntu tweak go ahead and install your poison. I have had no issues with ether, as far as your updates go, as long as you don't Upgrade lucid to maverick in Ultimate Edition you should be OK, but if you want a definite answer, if you could post a screen shot or shots of your update managers read out, then we could see what ya got going on!

My issue is that I have my ati driver working and I have gnome and daemon screensavers off but every 10 minutes idle my screen goes black and won't respond. Also is there a way to update from 2.7 to 2.8 without data loss?

64/32 Bit editions

Postby newmusic » Sun Nov 14, 2010 10:57 am

My computer can install the 64bit edition. Can I run 32 bit software on it?

I'm assuming you need 32 bit software to run on a 32 bit OS. If I load the 64 Bit (which I understand is the better option) can I load any software into into it.

Thanks

Thx TexasMike.
Will wait a bit to see when the 2.9 comes out which shouldn't be too long and then I'll change to the 64bit version. I am currently using the 32bit version of 2.7.

When I am in windows, downloading a big file, I am able to download sometimes at the maximum bandwidth of 400kB/s (South Africa)
In Ultimate Edition downloading the same large file, I can only reach speeds of 50kB/s. The system will allow me to download approx 7 files but all will run at the approx same speed of 50kB/s.
I have made no tweaks to the system or to Firefox.

I have the same scenario using download managers - In windows I use Free Download Manager and in Ultimate Edition I use FatRat.

Please advise how to maximise download speeds as its schleppy booting in and out of windows just to download faster.

Thanks
