KherKhere Yes I can see our problem here.
It looks like we will have to switch back the gcc and then to get it to work for you.
OK - no worry here you have step by step how to get it to work with the gcc 4.2 - then switch to gcc 4.4.
Please look carefully on the steps that has to be made there.
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=61677&page=4

It will take the kernel back to lowest kernel first ,
then after the compiling will be made it has to work for you.

Thanks Admin Amir ,

But i think gcc 4.2 Package is not Available right now ...

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gcc-4.2
[sudo] password for mehran:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package gcc-4.2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gcc-4.2 has no installation candidate

Hello KherKhere and you very welcome ;)

OK, I have made some Research on this issue and it looks not good sorry.
First I will Explain to you the reason for way,and what was wrong with the issue.
Ubuntu made here very very bad mistake :?
They have start the compiling process with gcc 4.2 and After A wail they have change the compiler to gcc 4.4.
to me it looks like they want to have the support for 2 Drivers at the same time for 2 kernels.
This was one of there foolish way to break the kernel with the Nvidia Drivers.
You do not do something like that on any process.
There are some workaround that the Team and myself made to bypass some of the Ubuntu mistakes,
but here on your issue it will not work as I can see - sorry to say.
I would like to compile the package for you,but when it comes to process of 2 gcc in the same process :?
That will not work.
the only thing that I can think on the issue for you is to get newest Driver higher then the Driver that do not have.
And to work on the Default option of the Card.
BTW - this is the same problem that break the kernel with the Nvidia Driver - that was on the net some time ago.

So it is up to you what to do now, I have point you to the option and the situation with the problem.

Thank you for you Patience and sorry for not solving the issue for you.

Potentially good news for you KherKhere (and Amir),

Looks like within the last few days, nVidia has released the full version of their new drivers for Ubuntu. (256.35)

You should be able to get the drivers by doing the following:

Make sure Nvidia repo is properly in your repo list.
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

Install the nVidia Drivers
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

Then go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and make sure "Nvidia current" is activated.

And finally, restart.

Note: The steps above will only work for lucid or maverick. If you want to use those drivers for a pre-lucid machine, the code will be a little different.

If I'm not mistaken, the code for the repo is:
Code: Select all
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu UBUNTU_VERSION main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu UBUNTU_VERSION main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"

And the Code for the Install should be:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-256 nvidia-256-modaliases nvidia-settings
In the event that it is important:
Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
GNOME: 2.30.0
Kernel: 2.6.34-020634-generic
AMD Athlon(TheeMahn) 64 Processor 3700+
Freq: 2211.340 MHz
L2: 1024 KB
Mem: 2009 MiB
Swap Mem: 5886 MiB
nVidia G80 (GeForce 8800 GTS) rev a2

Kai: I tried the above method. Everything seemed to be fine, but when I restarted I was not able to get compiz going in the new kernel and the system said that there were drivers available for download.

I removed the the nvidia drivers and booted into the old kernel. Reinstalled the current Nvidia drivers again. Rebooted and got the message while booting that some controller was not working and that I might have problems.
I got into the system and compiz was working, but that crappy, I just cannot be bothered any more.
I also not very good with the command line and often manage to stuff up things more then I do good. I did not manage to get 2.6 going, now I tried with 2.7 and did not get one bit further.
I just do not have the time for this.
Sorry for venting like this. Ubuntu (I know that this has nothing to do with the Ultimate edition) has stuffed up badly again. This is supposed to be LTS edition. No wonder so many people stay with that other OS.
Still, I will go back to the Ultimate 2.5 on my laptop. :)
I just wonder when they manage to fix this.

I am very new too linux. Have tried the Ultimate 2.6 and now 2.7

I have read quite a bit lately and had troubles installing the latest Nvidia drivers. I first ended up with Ultimate 2.7 not loading. My computer would just reboot.
Reinstalled Ultimate 2.7, then tried again but would end up with that Kernel error and Nvidia drivers would not install.
Or if I used the one that was in the Hardware Drivers, I couldn't get my resolution past 640 x 480 or something like that.

What finally worked for me was first using the latest kernel 2.6.32.23 and the following command

Code: Select all
$ sudo aptitude install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r'

Then Install the latest official stable driver from the repository

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

I read so much I think I get confused, lol but also had previously added the lines to Blacklist.conf file

blacklist nouveau

among a few other lines.

I then went to SYSTEM>ADMINISTRATION>HARDWARE DRIVERS

And it said it was a different version to activate , being the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35

I then rebooted and checked version installed and its correct.

Don't know if it helps but my computer specs are below

EVGA X58 SLI

GeForce 9800GT 1GB AKIMBO

OCZ OCZ3G1600V6GK (3x2GB)

Hi guys
I have a slightly different problem with my graphics card.
When I go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers. I see NVidia there.
Image
But I am not able to enable extra effects on my machine.
I see following screen.
Image

Earlier video quality on my machine was very poor, I got it fixed using the method explained here

The content of my xorg.conf is

Code: Select all
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 1.0  (buildmeister@builder62)  Wed Nov 11 06:45:14 PST 2009

Section "Screen"
   Identifier   "Default Screen"
   DefaultDepth   24
EndSection

Section "Module"
   Load   "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier     "Device0"
   VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
   Option      "ConnectedMonitor"   "DFP-0"
   Option      "CustomEDID"          "DFP-0:/etc/X11/SAM0117.bin"
   Driver   "nvidia"
   Option   "NoLogo"   "True"
EndSection

Where
SAM0117.bin
is the ebib file.
Any help for my graphics card?
My system configuration is:
AMD 64, NVIDIA 6200AX,
I have installed x64 version of Ultimate Edition 2.7
Thanks
padrifocus
