Jumped on this thread as it is close to what I'm doing. I upgraded to 195 through synaptic, however, it is not showing in synaptic as being installed nor is it showing up in hardware drivers. The only one appearing in both places is the 173 version. Is it possible that it is now the one marked as current version?

I followed the instructions for updating Nvidia drivers as given for Ultimate 2.6 and got as far as removing the Nvidia drivers but didn't quite understand how to install and update the knew ones. as a result I'm currently typing this message using Linux mint. So I guess I will do a reinstall and try it again. Would you recommend Linux for Dummies are would that cover command line procedures. Thanks again

I recommend Linux (U.E) to any one that can understand that Linux is better system then MS.
And to any one that is not afraid to cross the border to other systems.

how i got nvidia to work in 2.7 with the latest drivers
step 1 install and boot into the 2.6.32.21 kernel
step 2 open synaptic and uninstall the 2.6.32.22 kernel i rebooted after this
step 3 run the update using synaptic or the update manager and install the newer 2.6.32.22 kernel and reboot to select
step 4 i use https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates to get the latest nvidia beta drivers but you could now also use synaptic to install the 195 versions
step 5 run from a terminal sudo nvidia-xconfig
step 6 reboot
step 7 for sli only as i have 2 nvidia 9500gt so now i run from a terminal

After working on this for several days I have yet to find a solution for me. I have tried all solutions in this post but without any success. Do we know exactly where the problem is, i.e., nvidia driver, system kernel, xorg? It would be helpful for me to know this so that I could be looking for specific updates or solutions. The only thing I haven't experimented with is x-edgers as I am afraid this would lead to further breakage.

my point of view is that you add from the ubuntu tweak the Nvidia source + Ubuntu X source.
Then Update / Upgrade in the terminal,then close the terminal - open synaptic Reload => mark all upgrade.
Then Restart your machine.
when you back to your Desktop = > open terminal =>update/upgrade the system.
Then go to the post of the Kernel Upgrade and Upgrade the Kernel to 2.6.34.
Please post back on your status.

i updated My Kernel to 2.6.34-020634-generic as Admin Amir told in update Kernel Section ,

Now when i try install NVIDIA i saw this Error :

The Answer to your post is very simple.
you just need to update / upgrade your system on daily bases.
and you need to install the gcc from synaptic = all will work fine for you.

Then run the process again and it will solve the issue for you.

i did These Steps .

Reboot .

and in My Synaptic i take Screen shot , its same as your Screen shot .



but i also saw Error :

The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.2) does not exactly match the
current compiler (gcc 4.4). The Linux 2.6 kernel module loader rejects kern
el modules built with a version of gcc that does not exactly match that of t

it looks like I/we missing something here.

1- you have add the Ubuntu X from the Ubuntu Tweak to your source list?
2- You have add the Nvidia from the Ubuntu Tweak to your source list?
3- You have install the 2.6.34 (3 files) on your machine?
4- now I see that you have the gcc 4.4 on your machine.

So the problem that stays is the compiler for the gcc 4.2 to be install on your machine.
If all the above is correct and all process have made bu you.
