Hi - I think this is a hardware issue...

I've just installed 2.7 32 bit on a PC that has a broadcom wifi card in it. I note there are some other posts about broadcom drivers. However, I don't think this machine is ever getting as far as failing to load the driver. If I try the hardware test, there is no mention of the card, nor can I find any info about a driver for it. Looking at the boot log, I find this:

Jun 12 10:20:26 HP kernel: [ 0.644739] EISA: Probing bus 0 at eisa.0
Jun 12 10:20:26 HP kernel: [ 0.644749] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 1
Jun 12 10:20:26 HP kernel: [ 0.644755] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 2
Jun 12 10:20:26 HP kernel: [ 0.644760] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 3
Jun 12 10:20:26 HP kernel: [ 0.644786] EISA: Detected 0 cards.

The wifi card is just a standard add-on card.

Before installing Ultimate Edition 2.7 I had Linux Mint 8 on the machine, which is another Ubuntu derivative, and that worked fine, though probably based on Ubuntu 9 rather than 10.

The machine itself is a straightforward, mainly Intel-based HP PC; it's a couple of years old and there shouldn't be any general hardware issues. It dual boots Windoze and the wifi card works fine there.

If this is a general issuse should I try Ultimate Edition 2.6 or is a fix likely?

Thanks,

Paul

Did you check hardware drivers to see if there is a driver to install?

Might just need to load it up. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion but that simply reports that there are no proprietary drivers in use.

Until recently I've mostly used Solaris on Sun Sparc machines so I'm not hugely familiar with PC hardware. However, for various reasons I've started using Linux more, and to some extent I'm just experimenting with different distros, and this one looks interesting.

However, I've never yet tried one that couldn't handle bog-standard expansion card slots. I don't for a minute think this one can't, but I'm puzzled about why it isn't - see first post for error message. Because the OS isn't handling the expansion slots, it never gets as far as detecting the wifi card, let alone trying to assign drivers to it. (According to synaptic the drivers are in fact installed on the system.)

Hello robspop

For the Alsa issue please install the Alsa-Gnome Mixer, then you can try this fix for the broadcom here:

Hi

Thanks again for continuing suggestions. However, the problem is more fundamental than assigning a driver to the wifi device, whether it's a linux driver, a windows driver, or whatever.

The O/S simply cannot "see" the card at all. It is not a device without a driver: the device doesn't exist.

I think you can see from the boot messages I posted originally that when the EISA bus is probed, no resources are allocated to any of the expansion slots. That means that, after that, no expansion cards are detected. This is a desktop PC, not a laptop, and the wifi is an add-on card, not integrated into the motherboard. There are no other add-on cards but I have no doubt they would not be recognised either.

It seems to me this is some sort of motherboard problem: the expansion ports are not correctly handled so nothing plugged into them is handled at all.

I used to have Mint 8 on this machine, which is an Ubuntu 9 derivative, and it worked "out of the box". I just tried Mint 9 which, like UE2.7, is an Ubuntu 10 derivative, and it doesn't work either. Something that was present in U9 appears to be missing, or not automatically loaded, in U10.

Maybe so many people use laptops nowadays that nobody has noticed this, since they don't have expansion ports, and the PC I'm using must be about 3 years old. Still, there must be a huge number of them still out there, so it seems hard to believe nobody else will be using one.

I'll scout around and see if anyone else has come across this issue elsewhere in the Ubuntu world; in the meantime, I'd be grateful for any further suggestions!

A few suggestions...first...we have a lot of smart people here, who can possibly help you ( not me, by the way! ) but in order to help they need to know what hardware you are running..specifically the motherboard make and model if possible... then I would ask have you run the command...lspci...???this command will provide additional information...another command that might shed some light...lshw...(run at root..sudo lshw) or lshw-businfo

Sorry, no idea of model of motherboard. It's a HP Compaq low profile desktop computer, all original and, as can be seen from outputs below, standard intel chipset.

I've run the commands you suggested and output follows.

To my surprise it is actually seeing the wifi device, I didn't think it would.

Life was so much easier with Sun hardware!!!

Thanks,

Paul
